My daddy was in Vietnam.

He had a black friend named Bubba.

He was a good man, and those bad Vietcong, they done kilt him dead one day.

Later on my daddy came home and had a shrimpin business. He did some other stuff too, but mainly that shrimpin business, which was Bubba’s idea.

I miss daddy and woulda liked to knowed Bubba.

Someone doesn't know their history. Washington is the one who established the professional army of the United States during the Northwest Indian War.

I know you're referencing a movie but there's something so cringe about a grown man referring to his father as "Daddy"

I get it but put yourself in his shoes at that time. The country treated him like a second class citizen then wants him to fight and die for the country.

I spend a lot of time with Vietnam ex-POWs, help with functions, help them drink beer, etc., those are some smart, badass, patriotic mofos, none of them think it was a mistake or that what they went through was in vain

Total mistake. The domino effect was not real.

I can't agree with that.
Vietnam is communist.
Laos is communist.
Cambodia is communist.

Hearing an adult male use the word ‘cringe’ is 10X worse

Communism lasted in Vietnam until the mid 80s when it got so bad they became more socialist and a lot more free

We were rightful to go in

But our government caved in to the ideologies of those we were supposed to be opposed to.

Thats what happens when you let politicians dictate war, this happened in Afghanistan and now Ukraine. Guess we don’t learn from history after all

Obviously a mistake, but not as big of a mistake as the Iraq War/War on Terror.

Today, we have two Vietnams, side by side, North and South, exchanging and working. We may not agree with all that North Vietnam is doing, but they are living in peace. I would look for a better human rights record for North Vietnam, but they are living side by side.

So you think we should still be in Afghanistan and put US soldiers in Ukraine?

Hopefully you don’t think North and South Vietnam are still 2 separate countries

Your view isn't the commonly held one but there is an argument for it.

Those wars were really battles in larger wars - wars that we won.
