I used to swim across the river in my hometown to snag beer from from houseboats on the other side when I was 12.

Definitely a hate crime. They were yelling racial slurs at him the whole time. Imagine if the crowd was white and the dialogue was the same.....

Sad video. You could tell as soon as he jumped in he had no idea how to swim. Somebody, who knew how to swim, should have been on the other side.

I grew up in Hawaii and do not remember anyonr who could not swim. I remember having to pass a swimming test in 1st grade. The pool at school had a 6 foot shallow end too. You could not stand up.

Very disheartening that someone who clearly did not know how to swim, and was obviously hesitant to get into the water could (and would) be pressured to do so knowing that he may well drown.
If I were one of his companions, first thing I would’ve asked is “do you know how to swim?” before letting that charade go on. He also should have known better on his own.
That scenario is an interesting case for psychological and social factors that can affect the decisions we make. The hope for a car that could likely better his life was enough for him to risk it all. Saddening.

The further you move away from the Southeastern US the more people you encounter that can’t swim. Probably more people in the Midwest that can’t swim than can, fewer people have pools, lakes are too cold most of the year, too far to the ocean.

Pretty fricked up situation that the poor guy didn’t need to be in. I’m a pretty good swimmer and have almost drowned before. It was the most scared I’ve ever been in my life and I was trained for it. Can’t imagine how this poor guy felt

I can vouch for this. I work with a guy that played D league professional basketball and at college that you would all recognize. He can’t swim. He’s scared of deep water because he never learned. He says that he’ll stand in the shallow end but that not worth getting wet because it’s not fun just standing in waists deep water.
Yes, he’s black but not ghetto in any imaginable way. One of the smartest and most responsible people I know.
