It was pretty important to my parents that we all learned how to swim at a young age. Pretty much all of my friends knew how to swim in elementary school. Guess that's a white people thing?

I know that Graucho was being Graucho up above but he may have a bit of truth with what he’s saying. There has been some talk/belief (I don’t know if any real research was ever done) that the average black people have more dense muscle compared to the average white person and that it makes them more likely to sink than to float. Couple that with fear/panic and it leads to more drownings.
Again, no idea how true that is.

I know some black people who can swim but it certainly seems like a larger percentage can't or never learned vs other races. I'm just thinking and off of the top of my head I don't know any adult that can't swim.
My 13 yr old daughter could have easily swam that distance.

I’d imagine those broke and in urban environments don’t do many beach trips or backyard pool parties, regardless of race.

I’m not sure the two arguments are mutually exclusive.
They don’t want them to drown and swimming is fun. If you were totally landlocked she had no friends with pools your fear of drowning is pretty minimal. If you live in a community doing beach trips, boat days, pool parties etc... the desire to have them around and not dying becomes a bit more key.

I'm sure their parents didn't send them to Crawfish Aquatics or whatever but my wife never had formal swimming lessons either. She's not a great swimmer. It just seems like they'd have learned to keep their head above water at least in a community pool at some point.

Looks to me like he completely panicked when he realized he couldn't touch any longer. I guess none of the bystanders were confident enough to go in after him.

Yeah bro. Swim lessons seems like a middle class white people thing. Think my dad taught me the basics of swimming at some low grade Biloxi motel

I think he just reached a point that he couldn't touch bottom anymore and had to actually swim.

In Germany, students had to prove they could tread water for one hour before leaving primary school. No exceptions (back then several decades ago.)
Friends in grad school from the midwest who were doing stuff along rivers decided to teach themselves how to dog paddle. Paddle boards at the UT swimming pool, swimming laps with the paddle boards until they found they didn't need the paddle boards.

You cannot graduate from MIT without passing a swimming test, period, no exceptions. They had a student drown in the early 60s, and decided that some of the smartest students in the world not being able to do something as simple as swim was unacceptable.
