I worked as a public defender for a short time. The prosecutors are generally cooperative with PD lawyers on time limits and will give extensions when needed because they know how overworked the PD system is. Anyway, one of my clients was accused of killing a police dog after it chased him. The prosecutor on the case told me up front "no delays, no extensions, everything absolutely fast tracked and by the book." The cops, correctly, considered the dog to be a fellow officer so, to them, the guy was a cop killer.
