US mainland invasion in WWII - was there ever a chance?

Let me start off by saying the actions of the greatest generation in the War saved Europe from totalitarian rule and genocide. They have my upmost respect and I don’t know how i would have done in their shoes. However, I have seen this line trotted out more than a handful of times:
“If it wasn’t for x we would all be speaking German/Japanese now”
Well, how do you figure that? In order for the United States to have been absorbed into another culture and language, there would have needed to be an invasion and takeover. Was there ever a legitimate chance Germany or Japan would have successfully invaded the United States and established their totalitarian rule here? Of the two, I find the idea of Japan doing it more plausible. But let’s entertain the hypothetical notion the United States didn’t intervene in Europe. Is it really true a successful German invasion would have occurred that would have led to German being primary language in North America?

If it’s weren’t for the US, the brits and frenchies would be speaking German and munching sauerkraut.
Fakts.
Fakts.

No. Under no plausible conditions, including beating us to the punch in the development of atomic weapons.

Those oceans on each side of us are a big deterrent.

Wrong. Europe has the eu and white genocide now

What if Japan or Germany got Nuclear weapons first?

"Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide."

Was there a chance the Axis could have attempted to invade? I mean sure, but it would have been an utter failure. Germany didn’t gave the naval capacity to invade Britain much less the US mainland. Japan MAYBE could have eventually had we been more defensive and not pushed back but it would have taken them a long time to get to a point where they could. They’d have had to finish up Britain in India and invade Australia first before it even began to become a thought.
ETA: In an alternate history where no one ever developed atomic weapons and the Russians capitulated to Germany so that Germany could focus on the Western Front AND Normandy never happened/failed... maybe, but only if the war drug on 20 years. I think the zeal of the Nazis and Japanese would have handled 20 years of war far better than us.

No, and neither state sought that. Hitler made a speech in the Reichstag effectively cracking a joke about how absurd the American propaganda was about Germany wanting to invade the Western Hemisphere. He suggested that even if Germany somehow wanted to do it it was completely outside the reality of their capabilities.
Neither Japan or Germany wanted war with the United States. The fact is that the FDR administration viewed U.S. intervention in both theaters to be in American national interests. The Japanese hoped, naively, that Pearl Harbor would set the Americans back far enough for them to achieve all their goals in the Pacific and that the United States would ultimately concede the issue of Japanese expansion. Prior to WWI and WWII, wars often ended in settlement after decisive battles and the Japanese failed to comprehend that the United States was not just going to go away after being sneak attacked, even if all their objectives in the Pacific had been achieved. Wars were now being fought to complete victory or defeat in the new age of warfare.

That's not cool man, you blatantly copied my reply.
Just kidding, I dont really care.
But no, its absurd to think so. What would the Japanese do when they hit the Rockies if they made it that far? That would have been something to see.

I don't think there was ever a real shot during WWII minus Germany getting multiple atomic weapons. Now could it have happened years later if Japan and Germany controlled the rest of the world and completely isolated the USA and wore us down through attrition, then yes.

Unlikely, but assuming the fall of Britain, the US would have had to occupy Canada to prevent it from being used as a springboard.
Posted on 6/11/19 at 5:16 pm to Armytiger87
No, plain and simple.
Germany and the Axis powers did not have near the naval and marine fleet to pull off a cross-oceanic invasion.
Hell, they couldn’t even pull off invading Britain!

I mean, they could have tried, but it would not have succeeded. Conquering the US would be like trying to conquer the USSR. Except with vastly different climates over different regions of the country. Plus all the citizens with guns and all that.
But in order for them to have even made it to mainland US, our navy would’ve had to have been completely annihilated. Especially our carriers which the Japanese failed to do so. The Germans never had the surface fleet to make it a reality and the Japanese couldn’t have supported an attack as most of their men were tied up in China. And hell, the Germans were tied up in Russia.
No, we were never really in too much danger to be invaded.

The Germans would have had to build an airbase in Greenland. They learned the hard way that invading Russia in the winter was a bad idea. I imagine building an airbase in Greenland would have similar results, for half the year at least.

You’ve never heard an American say that or if you did you heard a moron.

at the time of WWII, had they had the ability to force project, I think the Japs would have made it to Chicago before encountering any real resistance, militarily. There are something like two or three choke points to cut off the entirety of the Western US so to think thats possible isnt all that far off.
That being said, the force projection is the biggest bit of the equation. Im not sure how they land enough troops. Even if they did it by surprise, we would still find out and then its Wolverines time. No telling what the local mountain boys would have done.
The other thing is they would have had to occupy us. Occupying involves going to sleep at some point. Our special forces these days do their best work when the other guys are sleeping. its the first thing the retired ones would look to plan if shite ever goes sideways here with our own government. And when i say sleeping, i mean like when certain people think the government having tanks and nukes would keep us mollified. Yeah, those tanks and planes need gas and upkeep. Good luck keeping motivated locals out of your airfields and supply depots all the time.
