Had the Germans pushed on Dunkirk and not allowed the escape of nearly 200k men, then followed up the battle of Britan with targeting the Brit's air force instead bombing cities as the original plan entailed, then i could see UK surrendering or at least suing for peace. In 1940, the Brits were on the ropes. German subs were wrecking havoc in the Atlantic, their air force was depleted, they lost all their expeditionary force equipment in Dunkirk, and if you add in losing 200k men, home front morale would have been need overthrow proportions.
without the UK in the war, there is no North African campaign, no Italian campaign, no staging in the UK for D-Day and a western front.
Still i dont see Germany having the capability to invade the US. They could have cut off shipping in the Atlantic/GOM with their subs, but that would be about it.
In the Pacific, had Midway gone as Yamamoto had planned, and he destroyed the US carriers. Hawaii could have fallen. In 1940, you had less then 10m people living in California, Washignton, Oregon. With the Midwest with another 25m between them and the Mississippi river.
at that time most of the US industry was in the Rust belt or East coast. as was the population.
but still it was a long way from the Japanese mainland to the US, making for long supply lines, and the were already low of resources for war. Defeat the US carrier fleet, UK out of the war, and i see Japan pushing all the way to parts of India, down to Australia, ad as far east as Hawaii and parts of Alaska. But still no treat for US invasion.
With no Western Front, and no US/UK threat in the pacific/Indian Ocean could Germany persuaded Japan to invade Siberia and open a second front on USSR?
HAd that happened the USSR could not have brough in reserves from the east to overwhelm the german forces on the eastern front, and without a threat of US invasion in the west, more reserves could be sent east.
only scenerio i see is US being isolated in the western Hemisphere.

Developing and dropping the atomic bomb was the game changer.
Had Germany or Japan gotten ahold of that technology first they would have used it and the outcome would have been very different and yes there is nothing to stop them from coming use it on US soil. The bigger question was how close Germany and Japan were to completing it.

The Japs absolutely could have invaded the West Coast, they could not have held it though and would have been slaughtered in response.
Forget the US military for a second as well as the logistical impossibility of the task, as long as we have an armed populace the US mainland can never be successfully held by a foreign power.

actions of the greatest generation in the War saved Europe from totalitarian rule and genocide.
Not entirely true. Eastern Europe was enslaved under totalitarian rule and unspeakable horrors from the Soviet Union from WW2 until the end of the cold war. Western Europe was liberated from totalitarian rule. We were hamstrung to not push into Germany when we had the chance and capture Berlin and dictate terms of peace.
We ended totalitarian rule and genocide in the Far East by defeating Japan only to have the Chinese Communists step up and take their place on the mainland in their own country.
There will always be men or women who will be the totalitarian dictator because there will always be lambs easily led to the slaughter.

I disagree. They didn't have any airframe that could carry a ten thousand pound bomb anywhere near the US, and the V2
only had a payload capacity of 2,200lbs.

Would seem they got pretty close considering Uboats were in the Gulf and nearby in the Atlantic.

Could they have done it.
Yes, especially if they turned Mexico against us.
At this point does it matter as the war been over since 1944? No.

Unlikely, but assuming the fall of Britain, the US would have had to occupy Canada to prevent it from being used as a springboard.
zero chance Canada would have gone into Axis hands with the fall of the UK.
