The bill, sponsored by Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, prescribes strict regulations around the use of automatic telephone dialing systems or other artificial or prerecorded messages. The bill specifically requires any entity making robocalls to first obtain the consent of those being called. The bill also requires the creation of reliable mechanisms whereby consumers can withdraw their consent.

I’m confused. So scammers are suddenly going to follow the law? Interesting.

I can totally see this being enforced. Congrats, HoR. You've managed to cross the aisles and pass legislation that has zero chance of being enforced.

I can already see the consent exemptions. "By donating money to John A. Cock-Gobbler IV, you are consenting to receive robocalls for every fricking election from here to eternity." It'll be buried deep in the "I have read and agree to the term of such and such" check box thing.

Spam callers would certainly follow this new law right?

Democrats are idiots.

I must've signed up for the wrong site recently because I've been getting absolutely lit up with robocalls this week.

If the telecommunications companies wanted to stop this they could.

Exactly. And I love the scam likely feature on T Mobile. Didn’t have that with my last carrier. I’ve got about 40+ blocked numbers. I don’t bother unless it’s several calls since I can just ignore most of them. But the persistent ones get blocked.

I wish there was something we could do- I own my business and do a lot of our sales myself. The amount of robocalls I get makes me tempted to not answer a number I don’t have saved.

It’s really absurd- I can’t see how it’s profitable for the callers

yep, if it was costing them money it would have been stopped. the only people dealing with this headache is the consumer, so the telecommunications companies DGAF.

I imagine the robocallers are not paying premium rates for their infrastructure.

What gets me is junk mail. I know it's dirt cheap to create and USPS makes the delivery affordable, but I don't understand who exactly is paying for creation of the bulk mailers. Does anyone ever read those things beyond identifying it as junk to toss it? I know I don't, ain't nobody got time for dat shite.

Honestly, if you are getting robocalls (that ring through) currently you are doing it wrong.
