A significant portion was the confirmed infected being allowed to go into nursing homes. Not from incidental familial contact of the elderly.
It’s likely part of why death trends haven’t been aligned with case trends after reopening.

Your entire premise is based on some kind of naive assumption that by hiding for months the virus will either go away or we’ll have a vaccine in hand that is readily available. Neither is remotely likely. Do you see how absurd it is to call for shutdowns when this could be our reality for years?

Trust him why? Because he's a doctor? He's been wrong on this way more than right. He's also a government employee. Yeah, he has no hidden agenda. Yeah, the US could see 100,000 cases a day. We could also see 1,000.
