Both Meyer and his wife are employees of tOSU and as such are mandated reporters. It's already been established that Shelley knew. It's going to be difficult to argue that Urban didn't.

Plus Urban's wife is an RN. She should know better. In most states you will lose your nursing license if you think there is abuse involved and you say nothing, and then it comes out that there was abuse involved. She fricking knew this chick was getting beat on!!!

She filed for divorce within a month of the abuse allegations in 2015. There were separated before the abuse allegations in 2015. She didn't go back to him again nor is she blaming OSU for any of it. I'm not sure what your issue is with her?

It is questionable that he did less than he should have. He could get by by saying he was informed the police had been called. He might have been able to save his job.

But now it has come out that he lied and said he was unaware the arse whippings were occurring. This is the nail in his coffin. He gone.

Bad behavior negates the fat buyout . Nobody wants a long court case so I am sure they are negotiating he buyout now.

why is it incumbent on Meyer or wife to solve

It's not. It's required they report it because they are OSU employees.

I'm in agreement 100% with you that it's dumb, inappropriate, and ridiculous.

But, those are the rules. They should have known that. They'll have to be fired.

Why do people think making the school aware after this point is material? I want an honest answer to that

Because the school can be held liable for punitive damages if they don't take action on Title IX violations they knew about or should have known about.

I'm not making a case for the legitimacy of Title IX policies, I'm just telling you why the school has a vested interest and a policy in place to make sure they know. They don't want federal funds to dry up and they don't want massive civil cases.

Does Title IX really apply here? Was the assistants wife a student or employee of the school? Doesn't Title IX deals with equitable treatment? The times it has come into play with sexual assault, domestic violence, and harassment cases all involved students, as I recall. This is an honest question regarding Title IX.

Informing the University is a no brainer in today's world, however. In fact, if you report a fellow employee to the police for anything, I would think you would inform your employer of the situation, or at least your supervisor. I do no know the details here, so I assume it is possible the information was passed up and just never made it high enough?

People are forgetting that Urban meyer himself is who p$ssed this lady off by acting like he knew nothing of it on media days. I believe that is when she was like, fine if its going to be like that then lets do this.

Also - Ohio state is probably more worried about with Zach smith will reveal - or they've paid him a lot of money to be quiet as he stated if he got fired he was taking tOSU down with him

It's pretty simple. You don't have to agree with it, but it's a rule for OSU staff to report these kinds of things. If Urban was aware and ignored it for years, and there's evidence of it, he's gone.

Courtney said during her ordeal, Shelley was always supportive. “She would constantly text me and check up on me and see how I was doing,” Courtney said.

quote:

One 2015 text exchange between Courtney and Shelley Meyer shows the extent of Shelley’s knowledge of the alleged domestic abuse and that she was concerned for Courtney’s safety.

Shelley: “I am with you! A lot of women stay hoping it will get better. I don’t blame you! But just want u to be safe. Do you have a restraining order? He scares me”

Courtney: “Restraining orders don’t do anything in Ohio-I tried to get protection order which is what started this whole investigation. And that should go through soon finally. It’s hard bc you have to prove immediate danger. Legal system is tough. Basically you have to prove he will kill u to get protective order”

Shelley: “Geesh! Even w the pics? Didn’t law enforcement come to your place ever??”

Here's my thing. You're being abused domestically and you tell me for hopes of support and all that. You've basically involved me into this situation. When the cops are the one who should really be notified moreso.

Either way, now i'm supporting you. And I can either continue to do that or call the cops and say "hey, think my homie's being beat". Then the cops go over and see whatever they see and nothing happens. I'm sure more abuse might occur.

It's like, if you get "dragged" into the situation, its bound to be a lose/lose situation for you. You lose if you say something and nothing happens lawfully and that person might end up getting hurt more/worse or you lose because you knew about it and didn't say anything.

Screw Urban.

However, someone mentioned that he and his wife were mandatory reporters under the law and that would cause them grief, legally.

But in what I've read in news stories, it appears Mrs. Meyer asked the victim if she'd reported to police and she stated that she had pursued a restraining order and how difficult it was in Ohio, etc.

To me, this lets Mrs. Meyer off the hook, doesn't it???

Urban: I heard this rumor from my wife that one of her friends said some other coaches wife’s husband hit her.

Urban: I guess I should call the State Police and call a press conference.

This is nuts. Not Buckeyes

OSU should put a "strongly worded letter" in his file and let him go back to work.

Whole thing sucks. The head coach is responsible for the program's integrity, success, and the well-being of its players. Not a lot different than any other leader...he should not have knowingly allowed the wifebeater to be a part of the program. If the cops were involved and it sounds like they did nothing, what is the football coach supposed to do in a legal sense? Again, his failure was allowing the wifebeater to remain a part of the program....which is probably because he knows where the bodies are buried...

OSU's policy is that mandatory reporters must make their report to the HR office. They have the option, but not the obligation, to involve the police.

Whether you agree with that is irrelevant. The fact is a faculty member at OSU is required to report to HR if they know or have reasonable belief that domestic abuse MAY have occurred involving someone covered under the policy. Zach Smith is covered under the policy, therefore, they're required to report it to HR.
