A long time listener of all the sage advice spewed here but first time seeker of advise….SORRY IN ADVANCE DOR RANT.
My dilemma. Have lived in Birmingham (Homewood area) and raised a family… Kids grown daughter graduated Ole Miss( no pics) last one junior in college… Seperated/divorcing(separate topic) …. Moved her into a secondary property I own in Homewood(subtle brag noted) and I chose to move downtown…. Cool renovated lofts in the “theater” district next to Alabama and Lyric/Mcwane center. My thought were it’s “ theater tourist area” how bad could it be with theoretically increased police presence?
I have been there since April but the shine has worn off tough to sleep at night with all the street racing Camaro/Challenger contests …. Motorcycle bandits blaring their frank sinatra /dean martin tracks at earth shaking decibels…. A Hobo turf war surrounding the area causes me to look left and or right to see the path of least resistance as all the would be souls that have run out of gas or misplaced their cellphones need more of my $$ acutely….
Best thing ever was Saturday UAB medical had their white coat ceremony middle of the day… all the happy families out front wanting a picture of their beloved in front of the Alabama Theater sign…. Cops come out of no where blaring bullhorns to vacate street…. Where these boys in blue after 8pm?
Anyway … sorry for the rant will take it to Facebook…. I approached my rental agency that I am basically a prisoner in my own home…..( I do carry but may need upgrade from Walther PP)…. They told me maybe penalties etc to break lease /leave before a year clause? Thoughts?

I’m going to read your post and see what it’s about but damn man, give the ellipses a break.

That's just a really long sentence

Holy run on sentences, Batman.

OP to not harp on the ellipses (you have to stop), you're describing something that's occurring all over the country.
People have gotten louder. Things are louder. I am unsure why.

I would be looking into moving to Highland Park (the closer to the golf course generally the better), Forest Park, or South Avondale. I would not be caught dead living that close to city center.

Here's the only answer:
located within a heavily Republican state. While municipal elections are officially nonpartisan, the city consistently elects Democratic leaders, including Mayor Randall Woodfin, and heavily favors Democratic candidates in national and local elections, contrasting with the conservative makeup of Alabama's state government.

Start working part-time as an officer then patrol your neighborhood?

Bro…..
Head on over to Paramount and grab a beer. Perhaps dinner at Helen, ShuShop, or Cafe DuPont? Wrap it up with a cocktail at any of the bars downtown and a lady to work off the divorce with……. This doesn’t seem hard to me?

Urban decay is nothing new, especially in Birmingham. The downtown loft concept in many cities seems nice on paper, but when there’s a true lack of police presence and neighbors who support the homeless and criminals, you’re still stuck, regardless of how nice your renovated building is.
Either you go to the office and apply for every social program you can think of to join the fun, or move.

So you lived in the Bham area and knew nothing of what things are like in the city limits, particularly downtown. LOL.

Several years ago I had lunch with an internet friend with her husband and her in southeastern Pennsylvania.
As we talked, we found we had a lot more in common than our hobby. They had done the move to a city (Baltimore), and found that it became less livable every year, if not every month. I could swap stories of New Orleans to match each of their Baltimore stories.
It was sad, but also cathartic.

I have no idea of what you want, expect or are asking people to do.

Yeah, the concept works in smaller towns (20-30k pop) that have historic downtown districts. Even in towns that have culcha issues, there’s enough going on to keep it safe.
In the bigger cities with decay, it’s just too widespread that you can’t pool enough investment money to revitalize multiple city blocks so you wind up with what OP is describing. Super nice stuff intertwined with shite that needs to be razed and a police force that can’t keep up.
