According to you they have insane amount of money. Then why are is my money going to an institution that is so deeply rich, that it can afford to just give away $160 million? Why am I giving a dime to this institution?

Taxation is theft. I also was under the impression you spoke English.

Senior year of high school I now file taxes and not as a dependent. I work some minimum wage job from my parents and report my salary as 16k a year. Apply to UT and get free tuition because I earn under 65k a year. See how easy that is to beat the system?

Not sure it works that way. You'll still probably have to report "family income".
I'd work the system if I could though. I encourage anyone who can to work the loopholes.

I think it's a great idea. You still have to get the grades and scores to get in. Just like anyone else with a scholarship, if you don't keep the minimum gpa to maintain the scholarship, you lose it. Kids shouldn't have to suffer paying student loans to go to school because their parents don't make much.

Is that supposed to be a logical argument?
I know of people with parents who made good money and contributed nothing to their college education. They walked out of college with $60k+ in debt. They went to public schools all of their life, so it's not like they received an education inaccessible to lower income children before college.
Are you saying this doesnt happen? Why should someone be judged based on their parents income?
Parents are free to make less and get their kid free tuition at UT or Rice. If it's so unfair to them, you'd think they'd make that switch, no?

As long as it's not mandated by the government I don't give a frick.
You do understand that UT is a state government entity that also receives federal funding, don't you?

Also didn't Rice do something similar fairly recently?
Probably their response to that move.
Because Rice and UT is an apple to apple discussion

They are universities that compete for the same talent pool. Which was my point.
The fact that one is private and the other is public is irrelevant, even moreao when you consider the fact that it's not taxpayer money they're using here.
You think their income thresholds matching Rice's is a coincidence?

Texas U-Lands could probably fund this bill just off their Permian minerals.

And that's exactly what's happening.

I'm not reading this whole thread, is this applicable to just the Austin campus or is it the whole system?
ETA: Nevermind, found the answer. Just the Austin campus. It must be nice to have responsible people running the university prudently.

I'm a billionaire with no earned income. Can my kids get some of that free tuition?
