Will be a certified diesel mechanic in 5 years. Just finished his first full year and now will receive full time benefits, pay, and of course all of the schooling and training paid for. Was paid while he trained in house his first year(basically part time at 15.00 hr).
No one is going to hire him. His education and training is devalued cause he didn’t pay for it himself.

The new ones can make a decent wage too with no debt. Pretty damn good deal for a young man really.
There is a shortage of mechanics and their worth is growing every year.
Ya, that apprentice program we're both referencing is pretty damn nice. Associate's degree, OJT, and a salary on top. I had a couple of my 91 series bubbas when I was a company commander get out recently and I told them to contact CAT. Wife said they're throwing money at Army diesel mechanics like its going out of style because of the shortage.

This policy seems to penalize students with high income parents and doesn't take into account whether or not their parents choose to participate in paying their child's tuition.
So of course in an effort to make things "equal" this system is going to unjustly screw some folks over making things unequal again.
The horror of being "screwed over" being the child of a family making $200k+ per year.

Is that supposed to be a logical argument?
I know of people with parents who made good money and contributed nothing to their college education. They walked out of college with $60k+ in debt. They went to public schools all of their life, so it's not like they received an education inaccessible to lower income children before college.
Are you saying this doesnt happen? Why should someone be judged based on their parents income?

How about your kid just work for a year and live on his own then apply to go to UT for free?

Well, dumbasses usually dont get into 5yr undergrad/masters degree programs.

I can remember an America that rewarded you for successes, seems like those days are numbered in this everyone gets a ribbon world. Sure the students will still have to qualify but I'm very skeptical of how admissions standards are going to play out given the political leanings in Austin now a days.

Depends on what you're doing... law/medical school, yes.
Advanced STEM degree, not so much.

Smart kids don't have to pay tuition, even grad school.
