Unexpectedly having to put down a family pet is rough.

Did this yesterday. Knew it was time months ago. I held it together until the vet started talking to my pet about how loved they must’ve been to live such a long life. Brutal. I’ve done this 3 times now in my adult life, all in the last 5 years with pets that have been in my life for over a dozen years each. Yesterday was the end of an era putting down the last one.

My old dog just stared my pregnant wife dead in the eyes while the meds kicked in and the life left her eyes. She never blinked or closed her eyes.
I’m pretty sure my kid is now the reincarnate of my dog’s spirit.
Sorry for your loss. Like with most loved ones, the hurt never really stops, you just learn to work with it.

I've done it many times over the years, never gets easy. I always sit with them, talking to them while the drift off peacefully. The last lab I had to do this for was only 8 and he was special to me. Cancer and spine issues out of nowhere, It was the best thing but still hurts me after 2 years.

Losing a dog is brutal. I've lost 4 in the last 6 years. 2024 was extremely brutal as I lost two dogs and then my dad on Oct 6th. I decided around Christmas time that it was too quiet around the house, so I bought another Great Dane puppy. He arrived on Christmas eve and when I was looking at his paperwork, I saw that he was born on Oct 6. The same day my dad passed. I don't know what that means, but I cried like a baby when I say that. My mom jokes that he's my dad reincarnated and he certainly has his stubborn personality.

Put my 13 year old yellow lab down the other day. She got bone cancer and could barely get around. Been a rough week. At her age though I knew this was coming sooner than later.
Had labs my whole life and have gone through this before but this one hits different. She was the first dog I bought and raised myself. Was my best buddy who went everywhere with me. House feels empty. I’m happy she got to meet my daughter though. I really feel she was hanging on to meet her before leaving. As much as I’m hurting it’s worth the memories. Hang in there baw.

I went through this recently.
When you lose a dog as a kid, it's sad and all, but the gears in a kid's head shift rapidly and they get over it quickly.
Well I lost my dog as an adult, and man, that straight up fricked with me. I used to sorta make fun of adults who overly mourned the loss of a dog or cat, not getting what the big deal is. I thought people like that were weirdos
Well that changed. When my dog died, I finally got it. Holy shite, I couldn't believe how badly I mourned his loss. I blubbered for days like a child. I would do grievey shite, like get on my hands and knees, and smell the area of the carpet where he always slept. It was rough man.

We had to put our lab down three weeks ago. I bawled and spiraled into some deep grief for a couple good weeks. I still have some times during the day where it hurts and I could tear up.
I’m sorry about your loss, it’s brutal, I agree. Take care of yourself and try to get back into your hobbies over time. It gets better, but man that initial grief is just a gut punch.

I had to do it to a dog who had just turned 18. It was rough, but I can't say it was that unexpected, since he was 18.

Our female lab was 13 as well. She had terrible hip arthritis and was losing mobility fast. Her pain was so bad she was licking and gnawing at her elbows and paws, creating bad hot spots. I finally told my wife we needed to end her suffering, the meds weren’t giving any relief.
I am sorry for your loss as well. Labs are great family dogs. We might get another one eventually, but 10-12 or 13 years goes by in a flash. The older I get the harder it is on me to put em down.

Thee ain't no easy way, or good time. I 've had one just up and die on me at age 4. I still grieve for her, and that was 40 years ago. More recently, we sent one back to her maker at age 15. That was no easier.

I had to put my best pal of 15 years to sleep last year, and I still miss him. I still get teary-eyed when I come across a pic or video of him on my phone. When I took him to the vet (who was, along with his staff, great people), I was able to lay on the floor with him and pet him while the vet administered the drugs. I wanted to make sure the face of a friend was the last face he would see on this Earth. It was peaceful. Before wrapping his body and placing him in a box for me to bury him at home, they took nose and paw prints on 3x5 cards for me. There is nothing like the love and loyalty of a good mutt.
