We had to do it a few months ago, and it always surprises me how much it hurts. I mostly held it together at the vet, but the moment we walked in our house and she wasn't there, I bawled like a baby and then cried again every day for weeks. Dang, I'm tearing up even typing this.
Dogs are the gift we really don't deserve, but God gave them to us anyway. Our bond with them is such a treasure. I'm sorry for your loss, for sure. Getting another dog is a blessing, and dealing with a wild puppy makes it better (ask me how I know.)

We had to put down my little buddy of 12 years last June.
He had congestive heart failure and he would pass out with very little exertion. On the day we finally decided to end his suffering he couldn't walk. It sucked.
We haven't done ourselves any favors with our remaining pack. We have a 6 year old Havanese-Maltese-Poodle mix, a 5 year old miniature Schnauzer and a 4 year old miniature Schnauzer.
We're gonna be in rough shape in 6-7 years.

Really appreciate it. I’m sorry for yours as well. They really are the best dogs for families. I have a 5 year old black lab also worried she might get depressed. And yeah and I keep hearing it just gets harder the older you get.

Yes, having to put down a long term pet is extremely tough, but is better than not and they continue to suffer.

IM with you, We had to do it several weeks ago. diagnosed heart murmur 2025, went in to heart failure was able to bring him back after a few days in ER. I just couldn't stop the inevitabe. 2 vets said 8-10 months, it was 10. Basically 10 months of giving meds 2 times a day , waking up 2-3 times a night letting him out to pee b/c of diaretics. He was so good taking his meds. Always scratched on door to be let out. He was a super sweet lovable dog. I knew the day was coming and tried to prep for it, but it hurts, and i miss him. And i have one that is 16 and we brought him back from the dead 2 times. Never would have thought he would be the one still with us.

I have dogs that are getting older and our time together is getting shorter. I dread the day I got to do this. On the other side, I’m getting older too and I feel like you reach a point where is it ideal to get another dog? I mean, if I get another one they may out live me and I’m conflicted with dying and leaving behind a dog-freind alone wondering where I went.

I did the same thing on Wednesday. It was rough. The wife couldn't go nor did I want her to. Our girl was loved and gave us a lot of joy and laughter. Never had a dog with so much personality. I feel your pain

I’m with you on that. I’m going to be 55 next month, if we get a new lab that will be it. I’d rather grieve a dog then have the dog search for me the rest of their life. I’m still not sure if I’ll be ready. Man putting our dog down three weeks ago was maybe the worst grief I ever experienced. My heart was literally hurting.

So sorry, OP. My boys are sending pug snuffles and licks your way.
We have 2 pugs. Both 10 years old. They are litter brothers. Love those little frickers so much. One has to wear a diaper in the house. He just dribbles pee everywhere and has no idea, he has an almost-lame back leg and already had one bout with cancer. The other one is deaf and basically blind, has hip dysplasia and gets into EVERYTHING.
They also love their melatonin calming chews, the little stoners.
We know it’s coming, but we do our best to keep them healthy and happy and we will not let them suffer.

Said goodbye to 3 dogs and every one was gut wrenching.

Just had one pass away today. Tough on everyone here at house now.
We foster many, we have many , but it's always days like this that make it tough. And since we have so many, unfortunately its a fairly routine experience.
But, like I tell the wife, don't think about the death, think about the life. All the good times, and in our case, how we saved that dog from Lord knows how its life would have turned out if a coworker didn't get the dog away from an abusive family.

I was a vet tech in 1981-83. My first real job in high school. I assisted in surgeries, spaying, etc. I attended dozens of euthanasia situations. You’d be surprised how many people just said dispose of them. Hard to understand. You obviously care. Sorry for your loss.

Making the call was very hard, but better than watching her suffer and appear not to fully know where she was.
She was 12 and had a good life, I like to think.
We called Lap of Love and I could not recommend them more highly. She despised the vet, so I was immensely grateful for an alternative.
This week has been hard on us and our other dog, for sure. Missing her everywhere we look.

I’m having to make the same decision this weekend. It will always happen when you least expect it.
