We had to do it a few months ago, and it always surprises me how much it hurts. I mostly held it together at the vet, but the moment we walked in our house and she wasn't there, I bawled like a baby and then cried again every day for weeks. Dang, I'm tearing up even typing this.

Dogs are the gift we really don't deserve, but God gave them to us anyway. Our bond with them is such a treasure. I'm sorry for your loss, for sure. Getting another dog is a blessing, and dealing with a wild puppy makes it better (ask me how I know.)
