It looks like the kind of snake you should hide from your wife so she doesn’t force you to kill it.

No problem, I've only learned about them recently because we found one and kept it! Kids think it's so cool that they get to have a pet snake!
My son was gifted this damned gecko for christmas. It will only eat live crickets, which means I have to feed it a few crickets every night. That also means I have to keep a stock of crickets. Which means I have to feed the crickets, too.

I don't have time to take care of a snake.

I don’t recognize that as a Dekay’s Brown snake

Not the ones I’ve seen recently

Markings are different. I think it’s a juvenile of another species, maybe rat snake, but there’s some better herpetologists than me on here

Thankfully she's getting used to all sorts of creatures. My 6 year old will go outside and catch all kinds of stuff. She was actually upset that I didn't take a picture of him holding the snake.

One thing to look for to spot a garter snake is keeled scales. No keeled scales, no garter.

Don't know what species exactly, but it's harmless and non-venomous. The only species of venomous snake in the Southeast with round pupils like that is the coral snake, and I think (But not 100% sure) the only one with a head shaped like that.

If they have elliptical pupils or a head shaped more like an arrowhead then they're venomous

The head sort of looks like a garter snake.

Coincidentally, my wife was telling me about stopping to ID a dead snake in the road. She felt sorry for it. She's weird.

No pics of wife or snake.

Well yeah this is a true statement, but if you blow up the second photo in the OP, you'll see that it has keeled scales. It's definitely a De Kay's brown snake, but they are closely related to a garter snake so it's a reasonable guess (although the head shape doesn't look like a garter to me).
