Well we already have 2 cats and a leopard gecko, so I turned this snake loose next to a ditch right outside the 'hood.

Point was the snake probably wouldn't have lasted long had we kept it. He's better off outside.

None of our pets are "mine", yet I'm the one always feeding and cleaning up after them. Funny how that works.

Looks like a worm snake.

I caught one years ago, tiny fella, couldn’t hurt anyone.

I was showing it to my boy. He was a baby then and just learning to talk. I asked him if he could say snake.

I’m sharing this personal moment because...the results were pretty hilarious

ETA: dammit. The true hilarity is lost without the sound. How do I post a video?

Say Snake

Figured it out. You have to tap for sound

but if you blow up the second photo in the OP, you'll see that it has keeled scales

I'll take your word for it. At 500% I can't make out a clear medial line on some of the scales that seem to be best represented, others it appears that there could be a medial line but I can't be certain. Again you may be on a bigger monitor and/or have more ability to zoom.

In general, they were very good and certainly not taken with a potato. If you knew to get great shots of the scales to show medial lines or of the face to indicate for example the absence or existence of loreal scales then you probably wouldn't need help identifying a common snake.

The best way to positively identify a snake is by using a local identification key but to use it easily you will have to know (or teach yourself) things like keeled scales and the different types of ventral and subcaudal scales along with the variations in anal plates. Some herps are easy to identify and some can be quite involved when differentiating species or sub-species.

Pupils can be round in venomous snakes. Their eyes dilate too.

I agree. I wasn't disputing that.

No kids, so I wouldn't know. Snap them inline.
