Truck nut death spiral: Solar cell produces hydrocarbons from atmospheric CO2

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have engineered a potentially game-changing solar cell that cheaply and efficiently converts atmospheric carbon dioxide directly into usable hydrocarbon fuel, using only sunlight for energy.
The finding is reported in the July 29 issue of Science and was funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. A provisional patent application has been filed.
Unlike conventional solar cells, which convert sunlight into electricity that must be stored in heavy batteries, the new device essentially does the work of plants, converting atmospheric carbon dioxide into fuel, solving two crucial problems at once. A solar farm of such "artificial leaves" could remove significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere and produce energy-dense fuel efficiently.
"The new solar cell is not photovoltaic—it's photosynthetic," says Amin Salehi-Khojin, assistant professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at UIC and senior author on the study.
"Instead of producing energy in an unsustainable one-way route from fossil fuels to greenhouse gas, we can now reverse the process and recycle atmospheric carbon into fuel using sunlight," he said.

I literally clicked on this thread only to get band name dibs. . .so frick you

They'll use the syngas they make to run the compressor needed to compress the gas and fuel the reactors which will make the fuel. Which will then deposit the carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. So, you'll spend millions of dollars to take CO2 out of the air only to put it back again. Sounds like a typical government plan that will only make a profit if taxpayers subsidized.

So now we're gonna use up all the co2 in the atmosphere and end up killing all the rainforests

Prepare to be disappointed with the ability to apply this new "game changer".

The game changer in green energy is already out there

The positive of using this over oil is we won't be introducing any new quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere, we will be cycling (very short cycle) the current free CO2.

So what are the plants going to eat?

It's too bad the oil industry is too powerful a lobby

That's exactly what I thought when I read this...

Yawn. Wake me up when we have warp drive

Christian contemporary?

File this with solar panels that can be printed on a thin film in mass quantities. I love all of this stuff, but the lab to feasible reality transition is what kills this stuff.

My initial thought as well. I wonder if anyone knows how much CO2 we are supposed to have in the atmosphere anyway?

There are good data on this going back for thousands of years.
Anyway, RE: today's news?
1) the process alone is carbon neutral - not CO2 consuming if you are turning around and using the generated fuel.
2) assuming anything like the relative efficiency of fossil fuels even excess uptake of CO2 would take an enormously long time before it affected all the "sinks" of CO2 in our planet.
For example, the ocean has been serving as a buffer by taking up CO2 in recent decades - a process that is not without its negatives when you realize H2O + CO2 yields proton ions (increased acidity) - and this in turn has altered the ability of some organisms to exist/reproduce that serve as the ground floor of our ocean's food chain.
At this point we simply could do with a lot less free CO2 than we have available.

Build a straw man . . .
. . . and then knock the stuffing out of him!
Wow, you are really smart.

That chart does not do a good job of illustrating a problem.
