re: Travel spinoff - I’ve travelled too much and now few things impress me

I personally think great traveling experiences need to include experiences of culture as well as locations.
Consider yourself as fortunate to have had the opportunities in your life. Once you get tied down with a family and career, it gets a lot more difficult to accomplish. I have a beach house 100 miles away and I often find it difficult to get away.

Yep.
Losing your sense of wonder (or wander) is a devastating thing IMO.
I prefer the local experience over the tourist experience.

This. He also used the word "awe"...in the context of people being in awe of other people's travel experiences.

So much I want to see and do out west but I'm in the mindset that I need to see everything in the NW first.

I’ve traveled more than the average person but there is always more to see and soak up. Even cities I’ve spent more time in abroad...there is just too much to explore no matter the time you allocate to a place. I generally don’t try to stick with tourist destinations. Some of my favorite experiences are wandering through a random local neighborhood or stopping at a hidden restaurant. It’s easy to get caught into “the list of places” in each city. I generally try to see 2-3 of the famous spots and then the rest is just however the city takes me.

My mom has over 110 countries, all 50 states, and all 7 continents but is always planning more trips because you can't see everything in a limited time.

I could “revisit” every city I’ve been to in the world and I could have brand new, amazing experiences in each one. There are definitely regions and cultures I prefer but I could find a lot of joy in even the ones I didn’t really like.

I do that locally which is why it's taking forever to know my state and I know it pretty damn well.

You sound like a miserable person.

I reached that point in Houston when on a Thursday night I said to myself, check my direct flight to London, 7:30 departure tomorrow, I'll come home at lunch tomorrow and pack. Anything I forget, I'll get there.
For the less crowded Grand Canyon experience, the week after Thanksgiving. Sometimes snow, and they open the roads to personal cars parts of the rim that you can only get to by free but crowded tour buses or on foot.

Sounds like you travel for all of the wrong reasons.
Rather than just being somewhere and enjoying the moment and experience for itself, you seem more concerned with checking achievements off a list.
Maybe you’ll enjoy it again when you travel just to enjoy each unique experience rather than how it compares to shite other people are doing.

I walked the Rim Trail last October from Bright Angel to the west, and it was one of my favorite experiences there. While it’s long, it’s not a particularly tough hike. Anyone in decent health should be able to handle it. Just make sure you pack water and snacks, as again, it’s long.

I'm thinking of taking my family again to the Grand Canyon next spring. Might do the Grand Canyon Railway train from Williams to south rim. Total tourist thing...but perfect for my family. My dad can't do a lot of walking so we will just push him in a wheelchair. Seeing the beauty of the GC again might be good for his soul.

There were so many ways to start this discussion but unfortunately you went the douchey route
I agree with you btw

I’ve suspected this is what got Anthony Bourdain. Add in a heavy dose of chemical dependency and depression. Living the life most couldn’t even dream up. Visiting every conceivable country and culture. Scenery, cuisine ...yet dead to it. Visiting people in the poorest of conditions living happily probably was like daggers to the soul.

So you are not impressed with new experiences are you are not impressed with travel others have done?
Are you traveling to brag or experience ?

If you'd walk into a live volcano, maybe you'd feel something?
