Never seen so many kids 7-14 walking around with flat bills and pit viper sunglasses as I do now.

Hilarious and so true. I know a couple guys with sons that do this and it's a bit much. We're all having dinner inside after dark and Nolan Ryan Junior is ice cold over there in his pit vipers and flat bill.

Relax little baw, no pop flys headed your way in my dining room.

He has an SEC offer already. Another SEC school is having him for a big recruiting event before school starts, and we’re slated for the first home game visit for another SEC school. This is after kicking sessions with each staff this summer.

that's where the parents really make it worse, they treat little Braxtyn as if he is a major league prospect instead of a kid just trying to learn a game

I don't have kids involved in travel ball, but have friends who do. I have never been to a travel ball tournament. What about the kids that are good ball players but can't afford to play travel ball? In addition, I'm constantly getting asked by friends to donate money to their kids travel ball teams. Why should I have to pay for YOUR kid to play baseball. Again, I have no skin in the game. Just curious

they get left out, when I was in high school some of the best athletes in the school couldn't play varsity sports because they either had to work to help out the family or have any spending money and parents could not get them from practice everyday, travel ball people don't want those kids because they would play ahead of their Braxtuns and Braidens

I found this to be repulsive as well, you wantt to go on a mini vacation every weekend during the summer so your kid can rack up participation awards, that's on your dime

depends how good they are and how much money the organization has and wants to win. There's teams that fly in kids from across the country on the team's dime to help win.

I actually coach a travel team. We do not do any fundraising. If you have someone that wants to sponsor that is fine, I even set up an TIN so they can handle their taxes accordingly.

If we get bags, helmets, uniforms and that cost 2k. It's 2k divided by the number of kids on the team and that's what each family owes.

Indoor facility or tournament goes the same way. All divided evenly amongst the players. A weekly excel sheet is posted with who owes what and a screenshot of the team bank account.

About as cheap as it gets for travel, we are lucky enough we typically don't have to travel more than 2 hours to find a tournament we want to be in. B and C class softball is big in our area, when you get to A class those teams are out of state every weekend.

We don’t travel further than 2 hours also. Mostly play Hammond or BR. But after playing in Gulfport, I’d rather just drive there. Awesome facility!

you have a book size that’s 10-15 million, you’re pulling in 1,100,000-1,650,000 in gross revenue from P&C alone. Factor in our bonus program and you’re looking at another 200-300k in one check. So yes, most successful owners are making 400-500k easily plus bonuses

Just renewed my Dover Bay policy.

Glad to know someone is getting wealthy over it

just different levels of ball out there that exists. You get to a major level and doing some real traveling and big boy tournaments, all bets are off as to the extents teams go to. Playing cooperstown in ny for w.s., teams "assemble" new teams to go play in that one event.

Been involved with a team for almost a year now and have never seen a ‘braxxxtyn’.

I just googled Louisiana travel ball teams, clicked the first one that came up, and they have an "Axton" on their roster.

It is really unfortunate that travel ball is the new norm, but if you're kid has any ounce of talent, you are pretty much forced to this now days. Rec ball has gotten so bad. I certainly don't think my kid is going pro, but at the same time he's been really good his entire baseball career, so much like lsu777, I don't want to make that decision for him. If you're basing your decisions on whether to sign your kid up for something or not (could be chess club who cares) based upon things you want to enjoy in your life.... Then I'd say you are a pretty selfish person and need to take a look within about what is important to you. For me, it's my kids and always will be. I've had plenty of good times in my life, but now it's all about what makes them happy.

I’m pretty confident the average travel ball team is not much more competitive than Pony rec all-stars at 10 years old. I’ll get lessons and keep my son active in the off season but I can guarantee you he benefits more by rec/all star baseball Feb-July, Soccer in the Fall and basketball in the winter. He also plays soccer in the spring on a travel light team.

All these sports combined will benefit him more than a single sport year round. The skills are very interchangeable and make him a better all around athlete than some of the kids I see focusing mainly on one sport.

Will re-evaluate at 12 years old and he can specialize a couple years before high school if he needs to “catch-up”.

The 5-6 weeks we spend doing extended weekend all-star tournaments are fun but exhausting, can’t imagine doing that all year. Baseball is all about reps, My kid can get the same amount of reps without year round weekend tournaments and get to enjoy other sports and non athletic activities. I love baseball more than most but let’s face it, it’s 3 at bats a game if your lucky and alot of standing around. Not ideal for most kids.

A friend of mine was the coach of a rec all-star team this spring. He begged to scrimmage my travel team.

We beat them 24-2 in game 1, called the dogs off after the second inning.

21- 4 the second game, with none of my starting infield in the dirt.

We are a C class team that can compete in B class.

There's a huge difference between rec and travel.

Rec all star teams beat other rec all-star teams by these scores as well. I see more travel ball game blow outs than close games normally. That’s called youth baseball. Rec all-stars is also alot of travel kids at the u12 levels. It’s really all about being comfortable with faster pitching at this age and having a good grasp of the strike zone..

I’ve umpired rec baseball In south lake charles for the past few years, rec baseball for the most part is bad here. You have a few players here and there that are decent/good, but they also play travel ball. My son is ten going on eleven and he plays “travel ball”. Odds are he won’t play college ball, hell living in SWLA he may not even play high school ball. He loves the game of baseball and is a good bit better than the majority of rec ball kids his age. As long as he wants to play “travel ball”, we will make sure he’s able to. Sometimes I wish he would tell me he doesn’t want to play anymore, but that kid loves the game of baseball! To each their own I guess. Great pro’s and con’s in this thread. Surprising for the OT!
