Baseball participation ages 6-12 is down 20% since 2019.
Cheerleading is down 23%
American football is down 13%
Swimming is down 27%
Golf is up 32% and Soccer is up 4%.
The College recruiters will be hitting the travel ball circuit handing out scholarships in a few years.

I think kids today are just doing less activities in general. Especially outdoor sports. Drive down any neighborhood on a Saturday and see how many pick up games of anything are happening, very few if any. It’s not like is used to be.

Curious as to how many of the golfers in that number are female.. That's where I've seen the biggest uptick locally.

Traveling every weekend to play a single sport doesn’t equal superstardom or college scholarships for the vast majority of kids.
The current generation of parents have started to realize this. If your kid loves a sport, then it’s great that there is an opportunity for them to expand their skills, but far too many parents were trying to force their lost glory upon their children.

Shits expensive and food is more important than sports for non-basketball-Americans without access to free food EBT cards

Parents ran out of money after signing up for those $1000/month car notes

This was bound to eventually happen. Burn out is real and kids want to do more activities.
Not too mention little league used to be what 60 bucks. Travel ball is now 6K a year

I know this board hates soccer but select soccer is just travel ball for wealthier families.

Travel ball, and the mindset that goes along with it, is having a terrible effect on youth sports. I have a friend whose daughter is on a travel softball team......she's 7.

Now put in fortnite and kids who think they will be YouTube stars. Guaranteed participation is up 100+% in that.

It’s a side hustle money maker for many adults. For some it’s their main business. They literally license out their organization name across the country. There are travel ball teams in Alabama licensing the name of a California travel ball org. WTF? Fools and their money are soon parted.

And it is killing local community/rec leagues. My friend's kid would not be on a travel team if there were other options. They have a rec league (kind of), but they were told that it wasn't much chance she would play if she didn't play in the travel league.
It is all a bunch of bullshite that is leading to burnout and kids hating sports early.

I had a 5 year old on my u-6 rec league whose dad put him on the U-8 travel team that practiced MWF. He couldn’t practice with us our only practice which was Mondays, so he only went to games. His dad told me that’s how it would be and I told the dad I couldn’t play a kid that literally never practiced, no one would even know him…but alas the league called me and said it was fine. 5 years old…3 days a week travel ball practice plus games. Lol

How is it you can’t play rec if you aren’t in travel? Isn’t rec supposed to be lesser than travel ball.
Really we’re talking about adults who’ve hijacked a relatively inexpensive and local sport run mostly by municipalities for their own personal gain.
