Kids get burned out with year round sports. Variety at a young age is important.

this is interesting. Golf and tennis are the two sports I think my daughter would be a good fit for. Maybe the ultra competitiveness of the usual sports is driving people away. Cant just go play to have fun anymore.

I think that person meant their kid wouldn’t likely make the junior high or HS teams.

The problem with sports is everyone used to play at home at the park for fun, all the time. It was like WFH but for practice.

Travel teams turn this thing that’s fun into a job, basically. It’s absurd. I see these travel coaches doing shite like work outs and army crawls for 8 year old playing soccer. They don’t want to do that. If you are running out of things to do at practice and have to do crappy conditioning drills to fill time just practice less.

There’s something to be said about a good travel coach and schedule. But they are very rare.

I don't disagree. The rec leagues need to step up, though. The kids are interested in "bling" and "drip"...unfortunately. The rec leagues are monotonous and have very little reward. A happy medium should exist, where kids are attracted to the local rec leagues by some bling and drip and more competitive tournament-like atmospheres but also not to the point that they are rewarded for every win and burned out. I don't feel like rec leagues have made any effort to keep up.

Travel ball is not new as a means of additional reps/experience. It's been around since at least the late 80s and early 90s. It took over when the travel ball organizations made a more appealing model to the kids. Aside from participation numbers being down some, it's alive and well from a volume standpoint. Fewer kids may be playing (slightly) but it's becoming more of a full time gig. People are brainwashed. And, high schools are now fully buying into it as a pipeline, so it will be very hard to break the cycle.

In my opinion, alot of these travel ball teams and organizations are thieves. The money put out just doesn't add up.

I could write a book on it.

Two of my kids play and I loathe it. But y’all are right, it’s killed local league play. I sign my kids up for league and coach them there and I have kids that show up without gloves. Or maybe with a plastic TBall glove they don’t know how to put on. I’m talking about for kit pitch level.

And yea, it’s too much. One of mine practices 10 months out of the year. That’s ridiculous. But it’s the only real option. The split second be tells me he’s done, we’re out.

This is so tired, my daughter plays travel ball. We spent less than 1k on the entire season. Uniforms, travel, everything.

There's a huge travel tournament every weekend within 1-2 hours of us in Birmingham. We don't even go out of state.

Some of what has been said about travel ball is true but there are many misconceptions about it. How many posters in this thread actually have experience in it? Probably very few, they just parrot what they heard from their cousins mothers uncle.

I’m jealous. We pay almost $4k for the team and that doesn’t include the hotels and this year they are going to Gatlinburg and Orlando. My daughter loves it and would practice 7 days a week if we let her.

This is such an interesting study to me. While I know this is about baseball, my kids also play flag football. Here in Nola there is rec flag, NFL league flag and FNA league flag. The NFL league has been around for years. Drew Brees started FNA about 8 year ago or so.

For many years, these have co-existed with decent participation. After this year, I think there will no longer be an NFL league due to lack of participation. There are just no kids playing. I asked a friend who's kid also plays in the FNA league how their participation was and he said their participation is down as well from years past.

Where are the kids? It blows my mind that just 3 years ago on both Friday nights and Sat mornings, these fields were filled with kids and now its bare. Rec flag has kids, but there is a clear distinction between the talent levels in the other leagues compared to rec.

That's unheard of in our area. We have access to fields, indoor facilities, everything. Still well under 1k.

My arse. You just on a local dad ball team. Go email the Birmingham Thunderbolts organization for the 14u and add in dues and travel costs. What age is your daughter?

This is awesome, so essentially all the pussies getting out of competitive sports and are instead playing the high action, sweat inducing, injury prone chess game that people call golf

I didn't even read many of the responses. My post was entirely from experience.

Thunderbolts are the exception, not the rule. My daughter is in 10u, plenty of competition around here in that age group.

Bolts went 0-4 last tournament, right here in Hoover, by the way.

I wish we would adopt a more euro academy style for kids who are really into a sport. Like have the multi day a week training and play other local like minded teams but for fricks sake you don’t need to travel all over the place playing meaningless games.
