Sounds like you didn't train your dog.
My wife and I have a 100lb German Shepherd that hasn't chewed up so much as a shoe. Though if you're a squirrel hanging out in the backyard you better watch out.

I love dogs AND cats, but will never own one again. As stated, they limit your time. I have friends with dogs, so I just go play with them.

This is the best solution here. Have a friend or relative with a pet. Hang out and play with their dog on visits and then go back to your home.

You are hitting on something here, imo. It blows my mind how much time and energy people put into their dogs. To me it's a huge waste. The animal lives 10-15 years and then has to be replaced. There is no benefit to anyone but the owner, and a lot of the time it appears that the negatives of the animal either outweigh the positives or make it a wash. I have several animals, but they all serve a purpose outside of companionship or my entertainment.
Raising a good kid seems like a much more worthwhile use of time. There is a payoff to you, the child and everyone they come in contact with throughout his or her life.
Seems like a lot of the people having kids, shouldn't and a lot of the people that would be good parents would rather have dogs.

I’m sorry you’ve got this mindset about dogs. Dogs aren’t referred to as man’s best friend for nothing. A dog is the only thing that loves you more than itself. Dogs bring out the best in us as most do require training, patience, tolerance and understanding. Owning a dog often requires you to be kind, gentle, compassionate and loving. Theses are all qualities dogs bring out in humans that make a person a better individual

My dog behaves better than most people's children. No regrets. I can bring her anywhere and she's well behaved enough to where my friends enjoy keeping her for a few days if I want to travel.

I'm in my mid 50s. My dad is close to 80. In my life, I've seen him cry 3 times. Two of those were at the loss of a dog.

Oh, I've done that before. 3 of our 4 previous dogs have had surgeries at times, one twice, then developed cancer, and we tried chemo.
I assume some of that is going to happen and plan for it. The companionship trumps all else for me.

I can agree on this but companionship and the bond between an owner and his dog can be priceless. Man's best friend for a reason.
At the end of the day it's about personal choices and preferences. Some people really value putting in the necessary time to raise a dog they love. For others its not worth it. Simple as that really. It is just really important to know what you are getting into before getting a dog.

Never any regrets. Taking on any pet regardless of type comes with some responsibility. Things like training, vacation scheduling, etc are things one should consider before getting a pet.
I have 3 dogs. Two of them are 4 and 3 years old. The other is a puppy that I'm currently training. The two older dogs as they are properly trained, I can leave them alone in the house all day and not fear anything being torn up or bathroom accidents. The puppy I cannot but I knew that in advance when I got her and that is why she is crated up until I get home from work.
The puppy is getting better trained day by day and it's a process. You have to be disciplined with a dog and get it to go along with the program.
It's not hard to train them, it just takes a little self discipline from the owner to make it happen. That is where most problems with dogs lie, not with the animal itself but the owners commitment to proper training.

Dog trashed the house with shedding, accidents, etc.. and killed anything that was smaller than it birds, squirrels, possums, etc.. I was always worried when guest came over on how my dog would interact with these new people or if my dog came across a tiny dog during a walk b/c killing and biting are natural instincts for these animals
