Anybody here ever regrets about training a dog? Did you do it yourself or did you pay someone?

Was it worth the money?

Dog trashed the house with shedding, accidents, etc.. and killed anything that was smaller than it birds, squirrels, possums, etc.. I was always worried when guest came over on how my dog would interact with these new people or if my dog came across a tiny dog during a walk b/c killing and biting are natural instincts for these animals

Maybe try training the dog next time

A lot of the inconvenience you describe about dogs is also true of kids, which goes to your larger point—there’s a trend of people using dogs (and cats for that matter) as substitutes for having children. I think as a collective trend that’s not healthy, though it’s obviously hard to comment sweepingly on individual cases. And you’re definitely right that keeping pets can be a demotivating factor for starting a family for some

I have an old senile pup with no front teeth who annoys the crap out of me and seemingly has 12 more years of life left. He’s earned his right to annoy me.

regret having them? no. never. I regret not having them longer and providign them more happiness.

considering one of ours was rescued starving from an office building, and now she lives the life of a fat cat, or our dog that was kept in a cage for the 1st year of her life because she was not allowed out inside the house, and the owner was Agoraphobic, now she has an entire apartment and weekly trips hiking.

I do not regret that 1 bit

I guess having a dog is good if you are socially awkward or just lonely and value the companionship.

Your parents regret having you instead of getting a dog.

Or better yet, just don’t get another animal pet

That sounds like the best plan for you.

I was going to reply with a witty retort, but you’re just a sad person. Dog’s live for when you walk in the door and can think of nothing else when you walk out of it.

To each his own. I have 9 dogs. I enjoy them immensely and get more satisfaction out of spending time with them then I do going on most vacations. They do consume my time and you’re spot on regarding their effect on spontaneity.

You sound like someone who shouldn’t have a pet. And that’s fine. But I think your take on them is far too subjective.

I got bashed on here a while back for saying the same.
My crazy ex-wife adopted a 100 lb. dog a month before she disappeared and filed for divorce.

I kept the dog for as long as I could, but eventually brought it to a "no kill" shelter.
I was working two jobs at the time, and was never home.

I've had dogs my whole life, so doing that messed with me a good bit.
I haven't owned a dog since.

Having a dog is great.

Having an owner that doesn’t know how to raise a dog probably sucks for the dog though.

If you wanna take trips… just find a pet sitter. Or get a cat.

Dogs are amazing companions, but yes, having them can cause issues such as can you leave them alone for a couple of hours to go out to eat, or if you go on vacation without them, making sure they are cared for.

I'm dealing with this now with 5 month old puppies. They are a ton of work, and I just boarded them for 7 days and it cost me $1K, but I knew all of that going in, so it's okay.

To me the rewards outweigh the negatives on dogs.
