Hate to say it, but this really reinforces some negative stereotypes. This neighborhood association is it's own worst enemy.

It's odd that here in Houston, there has been much discussion of "food deserts", urban areas that had no grocery stores. Residents were forced to eat unhealthy (fast foods) because they had no access to healthier options at a grocer. It even got to the point where the city council allowed exceptions to the ordinances that govern alcohol sales near churches/schools to encourage more grocery stores to open in the inner city. I guess some people just can't be pleased.

did you miss this little tidbit in the article????
quote:
“All of my neighbors were excited to have Trader Joe’s come here and replace a lot that has always been empty,” said Nghi Tran. “It’s good quality for poor men.” (The property has been vacant for 20 years.) Tran, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years, blasted the PAALF, noting, “They don’t come to the neighborhood clean-ups. They don’t [even] live here anymore.”

Not surprising. Most "activists" live far from the areas or people they claim to represent.

The Portland African American Leadership Forum objected to the proposed development partly because it feared that the new retail complex would eventually push up rental prices in the area and drive out the local black community.
yea but these motherfrickers can put up their section 8 properties wherever the frick they want to....
they RUINED my perfectly cozy childhood neighborhood to the point where my parents had to move... what a bunch of BS

My go to grocery store for college. Relatively cheap, interesting selection, healthy, great people. I don't understand how this would drive up rent and the black community out?
If it was a Whole Foods on the other hand...

I'm glad someone else saw that. The residents were glad to have it, and fwiw the contractor was also a black owned company. Minority centered interest groups are some of the worst things for the people they are supposed to serve.

I didn't realize there was a black community in portland outside of the trailblazers.

On a related note,
I was actually baffled when I passed a whole foods off N. Broad in Nola.

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread. The store opened earlier this week and was welcomed. They seem to be offering more of their cheaper 365 products.

I see.
The problem with whole foods is that their prices for goods that are available at other stores are significantly more expensive.
Most notably the wine prices.
