Toy drives

Does anyone participate in toy drives?
I used to do various “adopt a family” drives but I’ve gotten really discouraged either by expensive wish lists or stories of families returning everything.
I’m looking at donating to an organization that buys gifts for foster children but a lot of the stuff is pretty generic. I really gotta wonder if these kids actually want socks and soccer balls.
Anyone familiar with good local Christmas programs?

They NEED socks, these are kids who have practically nothing.
And a soccer ball is probably a legit request. My 6 year old has gotten soccer balls multiple times and gifts and love them because he loves playing.

Most charities are grifts. So research and choose wisely.

I give gift cards to grocery stores so they can buy booze, cigarettes, and lottery tickets.
My work does adopt a family. I only do it to look good to my boss.

Foster kids often have nothing. If they get to keep the items I would 100% do that.

I always find a single Mom or Grandma that is struggling to raise a kid alone and ask them what the kid wants for Christmas. I will then buy the gift (usually an XBox, Playstation, or bike) and give to the Mom or Grandma to give to the kid themselves for Christmas.

Giving poor families condoms or IUD would be the best gift for humanity

I’ll never forget volunteering at a toys for tots drive in middle school and seeing kids being dropped off in newly purchased Mercedes (still had window paint from dealerships).
It’s then that I lost my faith in the people that use these Christmas charities.

Radio Flyer does a grant a wish/buy a gift event twice a year.
There’s a list of kids and a short description about their circumstances and the gift that they or someone wished for them to receive.
You can select a kid and purchase the toy(usually half off as RF pays the other half).

I find a family that's in a rough spot and help give them Christmas.
Sometimes it's someone I know. Sometimes it's someone I don't. This year it's a dear friend down on his luck. Out of work, has a job lined up but not until new year.
I don't have much, but I've got more Christmas decorations than I need. I won't see a kid go without for Christmas when I can help.

I know it's not a toy drive or anything like that, but if you're looking for a great charity this Christmas, particularly something Christian, please consider a donation to the servant sisters of Mary.
They are a group of spanish sisters that got nursing degrees after taking their vows and minister to the sick at no cost. They took care of my grandfather in last months and I don't exaggerate when I say these women are saints. Would often stay with him all through the night. The emotional support they provided my grandmother at the time too was amazing. They refused to accept a dime, so myself and most of my family made a nice donation when he passed in his honor which I plan to continue doing... you can donate to the address in this link.

I do the Salvation Army's Angel Tree. Just make sure to pay attention to this lists because some families are out there trying to scam the system.

This. Most churches have an "angel tree" where people list an item that they need/want. The one at our church has a lot of diaper, formula, modest gift cards ($20 to grocery/uber) requests. With a few requests for higher end items (car seats, pack & play...)
I have seen too many of those toy drives where every request is for the latest tech, or $100+ items.
