Over the course of a year, the number of high school students using tobacco products, which include e-cigarettes, increased by about 38 percent, the CDC found in its annual National Youth Tobacco Survey released Monday. That translates to about 27 percent of high school teens using tobacco products in 2018, the CDC said.

Of all the tobacco products the CDC surveys students about, including cigarettes and hookah, only e-cigarettes saw a meaningful increase in use. Among high school students, e-cigarette use surged nearly 78 percent. In 2018, nearly 21 percent of high school students vaped, up from close to 12 percent in 2017.

The data confirms anecdotal reports that more and more teens have started to use e-cigarettes, particularly Juul. Public health officials, including the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration and the surgeon general, have warned that the trend could reverse two decades of driving down teen smoking rates.

Major congrats to the tobacco companies! They found a way to convince the populace of a completely safe cigarette. I’d love to take a marketing class from their leadership.

I work in a upper middle class high school. Tobacco use had receded steadily over the past 12 years. Until about 3 years ago when vaping became huge.

I can confirm that the high school ids are using these at an alarming rate. I don't even write kids up for them anymore. I just tell them not to use it in my classroom.

I just watched a John Stossel piece where one of his guests said that nicotine itself is no different that caffeine. It's the delivery system of tobacco with all other kinds of shite in it that's harmful. Not sure if that's completely true or not but it's an interesting theory

Kids need to man up and smoke unfiltered Lucky Strikes and Camels instead of sucking water vapor out of a machine.

I know juuls/vape contain nicotine but should it be counted as 'tobacco'?

Is big tobacco behind the e-cig craze to guide people to smoking? Honest question..

From Wiki

quote:

The liquid in the e-cigarette, called e-liquid,[8] or e-juice, is usually made of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerine, and flavorings.[9] Not all e-liquids contain nicotine.[10] The health risks of e-cigarettes are uncertain.[11][6][12] They are likely safer than tobacco cigarettes but are of unclear effect in relation to other methods of stopping smoking.[13][14][15][16][17] Their long-term health effects are not known

A cigarette is nicotine plus burnt carbon into your lungs. At least the e-cigs get rid of half of that. Plus I'd much rather be around vape smoke than cig smoke.

I don't smoke or vape. But I have to imagine a cigarette without the smoke, isn't as bad as a cigarette with the smoke.

Definitely light years "safer" long term than real cigarettes.

But the issue is kids get very addicted to the nicotine.

I quit smoking before vaping was a thing, but I wonder if it's easier for kids to use and avoid getting caught?

May end up getting bigger than smoking.

On the big tobacco company thing, I saw where Phillip Morris is planning on completely phasing out tobacco cigarettes in the near future.

They are going all in.
