There were a lot of deaths attributable to the cocaine wars in the 80's. Nowadays the junkies just off themselves by ingesting too much fentanyl. No bullets required.

Everything is relative. It feels worse because it is worse than 10 years ago. But I’m old enough to remember when they used to print the annual murder statistics on the front page of the Times Picayune on a daily basis.

I haven’t visited NOLA since November of 2019 and we felt very safe in the quarter during that trip. Compare that to what the quarter was like in the 90’s and it’s night and day. You were legitimately worried if you ventured very far off Bourbon back then.

NO has dropped in population so much since the 60s that per capita rates might not always be easy to compare various decades.

1960* 627,525 +10.0%
1970* 593,471 -5.4%
1980* 557,515 -6.1%
1990* 496,938 -10.9%
2000* 484,674 -2.5%
2010* 343,829 -29.1%
2020* 383,997 +11.7%

Sigh. First of all, I love the way you throw that "probably" in there - that one word is doing a lot of work for you. And then the rest of your post is just nonsense.

I'm over 45 and I'm aware that the murder rate and the violent crime rate is significantly lower than in the 70's and the 80's. The reason people perceive that they are higher now is because of instantaneous access to the news that is at your fingertips that didn't exist previously. Crimes that didn't make it to broadcast tv or were put on the back pages of the newspaper are now right under your nose 24/7. This actually has been common knowledge for a long time and maybe you just weren't aware of it. My ego can handle this data. However I am offended by your ignorant use of grammar and poor display and presentation of the data.

Crime is way higher where I live than before the pandemic. And also conviction rates are way down. Your graphs are unavailing because you are conveniently not talking about the record low conviction rates and record high recidivism going on right now. You are not presenting a complete picture.

Haven't you learned about the false news yet. They know how to make the math say the Biden had the most votes in history. People love him. They do the same with crime numbers. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that they are lying about the number of crimes being reported.

So a bunch of major metro arrears haven’t set murder records the past few years and there is no need for any more gun control?

Oh I see. This whol post is really only about you not liking old white dudes. It’s annoying when old people play the “my generation is better” game. It’s just stupid when you do it.

This says nothing about woke DAs and woke judges letting the trash of society continue to roam the streets as payback to whitey, thus, it's pointless.

It’s not old people claiming guns are a problem. We know the crime rates started going down in the 90’s.

A lot of property crimes are no longer reported especially in BR and NO.

How many calls in NO that are called in actually have an officer show up to do a report?

Police chiefs want themselves to look good.

This is such a stupid thread. In a place like Baton Rouge violent crime was isolated in bad areas and not spread across the entire parish. You wanna try to tell me areas like O’Neal Lane, Shenandoah, St George are safer now than they were in the 80s? frickin idiot.

Direct deposit and banking / trading with plastic instead of cash has made street crimes like mugging etc. much better...now anyone bent that way can do it electronically and not have to knock folks in the head. Crime is not as bad but we have an older population who spends an inordinate amount of time watching their choice of what is, for all practical purposes, the modern day op-ed page which is CNN, MSNBC and Fox News and they are convinced that the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

Crime, especially violent crime, is also worse in rural areas than in urban areas...and by a significant margin, per capita. You are far more likely to be a victim of violent crime in the rural south than in New York or Chicago. They won't have none of that either, convinced that major cities are war zones.

I was almost with you, but none of your charts actually go beyond covid, so the whole argument of no increase in crime since covid is bunk.

Plus I lived in New orleans, 3-9 hours for cops to show up if they show up at all. People arent even reporting crimes anymore.
