In his defense, Rush was right there with them in the sub. He might have been arrogant and reckless, but at least he was arrogant and reckless with his own life too.

Reminds me of Mayor Vaughn in the hospital scene from Jaws after the shark attacked the guy in the rowboat and Brody was telling him it was time to quit the shite and kill the shark,

“Martin… Martin, my kids were on that beach too.”

Final photo : notice the window of the house in St. Johns that's where the six inch viewing port should have been.

Good clear phots of what's left.

I wonder if they took water samples to test for DNA and or carbon fibers and resin.

These fools are now cranking in Davy jones locker. Because that’s what nubs do.

After watching some videos on the Deepsea Challenger Sub (the one James Cameron made for Challenger Deep) & Limiting Factor sub (Victor Vescovo's full ocean rated sub) its amazing how over engineered, QC'd, tested, and validated those were compared to the Titan, definitely built for different levels of depth but still shows just many corners Stockton cut.

Actually I think that's the pressure ring that was epoxied to the carbon fiber. The end cap made out of titanium was rounded and that opening looks to be way larger than the viewport (6"). I think the carbon fiber flexed and the pressure ring experienced some uneven stress at the junction with the carbon fiber, causing the epoxy to fail.

Definitely some poor choices made during design and construction.

Sad that his own hubris cost other people their lives...

It’s dangerous for a single entity to build and operate for profit a vehicle for such extreme conditions.

Me too. I don't fully understand if it imploded, unless the carbon fiber piece just disintegrated and relived pressure so the other pieces remained whole?

Yeah, after I looked at some of the pictures, they recovered just about everything except for the hull, of course.

They should look into making a whole sub out of that stuff instead of just the ends of it.

Yeah, but it's also much more expensive to do that. Going cheap was the whole idea for this project.

Daily Mail is reporting they found human remains in the wreckage:
quote:

Amid those recovered pieces, Coast Guard officials said they discovered human remains, which will now be transported aboard a ship to a port in the United States where they will undergo testing and analysis.

James Cameron had said this earlier
quote:

'There were two titanium end caps on each end. They are relatively intact on the sea floor. But that carbon fiber composite cylinder is now just in very small pieces. It's all rammed into one of the hemispheres. It's pretty clear that's what failed.'

Another issue with the Titan besides the material of the pressure hull was the hull’s cylindrical design instead of a spherical one.
quote:

The Titan differed in other ways. Unlike the spherical shape of the Deepsea Challenger that distributed pressure equally, the Titan’s cylindrical shape meant that some parts of the craft were subject to more pressure than others.

EDIT: Was the rear titanium end cap seen taken off ship in Canada or is it being taken to the US due to it possibly having the human remains?

OK. So the view port is gone in this picture so the question is did the carbon fiber fail or the plexiglass viewport? Could be either, but remember the plexiglass was only certified to 1300M and Stockton wouldn't pay for one to be made for the 4000M rating.

To go with the other poster wondering about the rear titanium cap, if the viewport blew out it could have sent the pressure wave from front to back and made a serious mess of anything to "survive" the implosion. All 5 on board could have been compressed into jello at the rear as the carbon fiber hull was shattered.

I'm sure there will be many documentaries made on this.

I’m glad this isn’t my job.

Looks like it probably blew out. The flange and everything else is gone. Looks like the hunk of titanium is all that is left.

If I had to bet on it I'd wager the carbon fiber cylinder or the bonded joint between it and the titanium flange is what let go.

It's really a damn miracle it ever made it down and back up a single time, much less multiples of tines.
