Serious question. Are you trolling?

Just because it had carbon fiber doesn't mean it was advanced. The "testing" of the design left much to be desired. The experts(over 20 of them) wrote the company and tried to warn them, this was a slow motion train wreck. A matter of when not if.

Do even a little research and you will see. Compare this "high tech" POS to a real DSV like the Alvin and there is no comparison. The Alvin was put in service in 1964, has a test depth of 6500M, and has over 5000 dives. That is a proven system.

So just because a few people have made it over Niagara Falls and lived you think it's a safe method of travel since "it has been done successfully"?

All according to your perspective.

Evidently playground equipment for children that we used to play on is now "idiotic" so it depends on your taste for risk. Experimental homemade airplanes are "idiotic" to a lot of folks, but its a very popular hobby.

This is one hell of a take. No shock you're the one to make it

The only dude that survived going over Niagara twice was shucking oysters at a bar in Miramar Beach for years until he died last year

Stockton rush estate should be sued for everything
He was nothing more then a used car salesman trying to get gullible people on this trip and targeted the father son dynamic

I like this lady.

Having successfully sent a cat over the falls in a barrel two days previously, Taylor survived going over the falls in an oak barrel as a stunt designed to help her financially. She exited the barrel bleeding but was not seriously injured

I bet the cat tore her arse up when she took it out of the barrel.

There is no single component of the first iteration still in service.

As a general rule you are alway liable for your own torts. That is, if the president of a large company were to negligently mop the floor and some schmuck slipped the president could be sued personally. So if Stockton’s estate wants the protection of the corporation, they will have to blame the math and engineering needs. However it seems a lot of those nerds weren’t ‘cool’ enough to let design issues slide so that may not work.

And?

The point stands. Compare how Alvin was designed and operated over the years and how Titan was.

Alvin was designed and put in service successfully with 1960's tech. It has been refit/upgraded over the years and is still in service and has a safe operating record.(It sank once in a handling mishap when it was dropped in the ocean with the hatch open, but it wasn't the sub's design at fault).

Fast forward 60 years and think of the computational power available, materials tech advancements and experience gained in deep sea research in those years. Basically everyone in the industry told OceanGate that they were headed for disaster but he was like "Nah it'll be fine". Pure hubris.

This is a legal mess when you think about it. You have international waters/maritime law. Then company incorporation location and LLc etc.You can debate the waiver. You have plenty of experts that said disaster was inevitable etc.

Then you have billionaires involved so if they decide to go scorched earth they can financially ruin the company and family estate even if they "lose". They just have to drown everyone in litigation. It just depends on if they are vindictive enough.

A small company w/dead CEO against the estates (lawyers) of a couple billionaires…better odds being in that ‘sub’. Game over but that’s already happened.

Right, i think it was mentioned above, or i saw on the news- that OceanGate has already shut it’s doors for good… OceanGate to me is like what Kevin Bacon says about Markinson in A Few Good Men- “Markinson’s gone… There is no Markinson.”

Steel is acceptable per the standards because it is homogeneous with very predictable yield limits. There are common, accepted methods of non-destructive examination used to confirm no weaknesses or cracks have occurred due to repeated stresses or fatigue.

Apparently, there are no good methods for inspecting a particular piece of carbon fiber for fatigue, and accurately compare to its as-new condition. The design of the Titan had transitions from carbon fiber to titanium, sealed with epoxy. Those transitions saw repeated stresses from pressure and temperature on those previous dives. Again, no way to inspect the epoxy for weakening.

That is my understanding anyway.
