This question may be BS but the "new way" is actually teaching kids to think about math more logically which will help them as the math gets harder (algebra, calculus etc). The "new way" is actually the way people good at math have always done it. It does make it harder for a lot of kids at the beginning though. Just have to stick with it.

The trick here that the teacher cleverly threw in is that the Irish always see in double because of all the drinking.

the "new way"
is harder than the old way and is more beneficial in the end. It helps the kids work on their problem solving and critical thinking skills, along with their math skills.

The problem makes complete sense when you realize that Stumpy stole some coins between the time Goldie counted by 3s and when he counted by 5s.

Stumpy is a fricking thief.

My kid (10yo) understands the new math well. My only complaint is that they don't memorize multiplication tables anymore.

I downloaded RocketMath for him and it sends me reports. it's speed multiplying/dividing and it worked great.

Is there even a fricking question? It doesn't say "How many coins does Goldie have?

The only question in the whole thing is "I don't?" So I would think that means the answer is "Yes" Yes you don't have to count anymore because Stumpy Mcfrickface already knows what "knackered" means, as evidenced by him saying so.

I need to see the portion you cut off the pic, something is missing. If you assume the overall question is "How many coins does Goldie McRottenPussy have?" Then the answer is not possible based on the information given.

What does it say between "I know what knackered" and "four-leaf clover here says you don't need to count anymore" ?

frick this waste of time, give us all the info.

47

between 40-50
multiple of 5, +2

That's the only possible number. I don't get what's confusing about this?

edit: oops I forgot about the rule of 3's. There's no correct answer as 46 isn't divisible by 3. The number has to end in a 2 or a 7 based on the 5+2 rule. 42 or 47 are the only possible answers based on the 5+2 and 40-50 rule but neither 46 nor 41 are divisible by 3.

What about the counting by 3 and having 1 left over part?
