Calling it a “sale” is generous. It seems more like a seizure given the restrictions placed on the seller. It’s one of the most valuable tech companies in the world that is being forced to fire sale. Gen Z has grown up in a world where everything they are, and do, is posted online. Privacy is not a priority. Silicon Valley and their legions of advertisers paved the way.

Anyone on either side in favor of this is either a fool or doesn’t care at all about maintaining the 1st amendment.
If they just wanted to ban tiktok the bill would be 5 lines. Instead this gives the government full authority to deplatform any company they don’t like moving forward under the guise of election interference and will use that threat to force companies to administer their sites as the government sees fit.

That’s why this is farcical. American companies do the same thing re: retaining and selling your data. All of it.

I hate tiktok... I always roll my eyes when my wife sends me one that she SWEARS Im gonna find hilarious this time.... but I really feel like the gov has bigger security fish to fry here... also I think it's hillarious that anyone thinks banning this ONE app is gonna solve that data mining problem

TT was not banned for stealing our data.
The Federal Government uses hundreds of American companies to steal our data and turn it over to them.
TT was banned because when the FBI called the with a list of users to ban and censure TT didn’t answer the phone.
If TT sells to an American company the FBI will then be able to censer and that’s all they are about.

The problem isn't the actual app. The problem is that it makes the Facebook and Google ToS look like childsplay when it comes to gathering information from your phone. It gathers information from everything you do on your phone not just data from the app. The issue is that while it does all that stuff the information on that app tends to subvert mainstream media. Now narratives are harder to control but the other side of the coin is China controlling our public's viewpoint. It sucks but this bill is definitely the "safer" decision only because it's preventing China from gathering free information with unfettered access. Freedom isn't safe but I hate China so it's feels weird as long as this was the true intention not some power grab.
