Thoughts on living in Ponchatoula, LA?

Accepted a job in Hammond, LA and am looking at houses in Ponchatoula.
Covington/Mandeville area is a bit pricey for me and also a longer drive to the office than I want to do daily.
More bang for the buck with houses in Ponchatoula.
Any advice from those of you familiar with that area of the state?
I’m moving back to Louisiana after almost 10 years across the country. No kids yet.

Do you have school age children? If so, I probably wouldn't put my kids in Ponchatoula public schools. Springfield/Albany/Holden worth looking at for nearby public schools

No kids yet, by the time I need to cross that bridge, we plan on making the move to Covington/mandeville area

My brother lives there and enjoys it. They live in the Belle Foret neighborhood off of Hwy 22. Nice neighborhood with decent size lots. That's all I've got.

I'm sure i'm in the minority but i've been in Albany over 10 years now, Hammond being where we frequent for shopping, dinner, etc. I love it. Way less crowded than the Mandeville/Covington area. Is it as nice? No. Is it more hood in alot of areas? Also yes. I love the downtown area though, all the good local restaurants, the farmer's market. It ain't a bad place to live. Easy drive to the airport, easy drive to the nearby big cities (BR/NOLA). Real easy drive to Mandeville/Covington area. I'd imagine Ponchatoula has a similar feel, with a little more to offer in town than Albany has.

You could do worse than Ponchatoula, but I'd also check out Robert, La. if you think Covington is too expensive / far away from work.

My daughter-in-law is a realtor with Blue Herron. Ponchatoula is safer than Hammond.

we live right outside Hammond and love it. Ten minutes to ponchatoula and ten minutes to downtown hammond; 20 minutes to Covington, 20 minutes to manchac.
We looked hard at Springfield when we were moving 20 years ago but it was right after Katrina and the visible waterlines on houses in the waterfront areas got us spooked.
ponchatoula has the same issues that Hammond does…deep pockets of ghetto criminality. But you can’t escape that nowadays unless you abandon all pretense of communal living and just lock yourself behind a gate, which is not for us.
Look around and take your time and you’ll likely find a place you like in the three town area that has a decent lot, some room to breathe and a house you can get value on. If you do that the quality of life is very high. Very little if any traffic, good to great dining and drinking options, good healthcare facilities, quick access to outdoor activities, and four point access to get out of town (55N/S, 51N/S, 12 and 190 N/S).
We could leave and we aren’t going to. It’s good living with very few aggravations
