Congrats on your weekend visit to Houston. I bet you ate at Pappas BBQ, went to Big Woodrows, and visited the Galleria Mall. Really seeing what such a large city has offer...

Career opportunities
Portland OR hands down best place I’ve ever lived despite the insane politics.

Joined the military. My family, the food, and seeing my favorite sports teams will keep me coming back for visits, but I don’t think I’ll ever move back.
I leave Germany for Colorado in a few months and see CO as a place where we will settle down permanently.

I left because of an opportunity elsewhere. When the opportunity to move back arose, I seized.
Go wherever it is you're thinking of going, and then one day come back. It's great.

reasons why you choose to leave - Work
how do you feel about the place you moved to. - Love it
Suburbs of DFW, everything is new and modern, great people, schools, sports, food, entertainment.
I go home to North La and it still looks like 1982, same people who were popular in high school clinging to that passed dream while living the double wide life. Nothing to do, no work, poor arse people. Depressing as shart

I started in Louisiana out of LSU. My company moved me to Texas for five years and then back to New Orleans for two and then to Houston. I have been in Houston for 20 years now. Texas has been very good to me and my family. I could not of had the career I have had in Louisiana.

Main reason: schools.
I moved to a place with great public schools without having to live in the burbs and commute an hour each way, so overall I think it has been a good decision.

Are you sure? This thread seems to be full of college educated, middle and upper middle class stable contributing members of society who left Louisiana early in their adult lives. That is not a viable long term strategy for the state.
Your attitude about the drain of good citizens is part of the problem. Make people want to stay by providing basic services and a decent quality of life with good paying jobs.

Lived in LA for 30 years. Moved to Japan. Honestly the only things in LA that I miss are my family, friends and the food. Those are the only reasons I'd move back there too.

I left grudgingly, after failing to find entry level work making use of the education I had just worked so hard to obtain... initially, I felt like a fool for wasting all those years on a STEM degree in a region without perceiving a way to capitalize on it. I felt like all the hard work I put in and missed opportunities to party my arse off was a very big mistake. Then, I read the label on a couple of the video games I wanted to buy (but couldn't afford) and followed that to the source.
That took me to California... after spending a little bit time, my feelings towards Orange County:
* Gratitude: the OC has been very, very good to me. As has Louisiana. Except the terms and conditions here are more advantageous to me. This place has offered me liberties, opportunity, and wealth that Louisiana never has.
* Common Motives: the people here come from all over (the country and planet). Many are like-minded and got here driven by the same hunger. Wanting to kick-arse at your job, and be the best at what you do is the default mindset around here; it's a very attractive state of affairs.
* Pity: as great as this place is, it has the capacity for ascension to even greater heights. Crawfish do not occur here naturally the way they do in south Louisiana.
* Burned: not by any humans or arsonist-scum, but by Sol itself. We don't have many clouds and rain is a rare treat. I never thought bright sunshine would ever get old, but it does. Is it harsher than Gulf-Coast muggy heat? Hell, NO! Not even in the same galaxy of misery, but it could benefit from a cold-front here and there.
* Self-Pity and entitlement: the nearest Popeyes is over 5 miles away.

Same.
Left LA without a job or housing, I'm perfectly content where I ended up.
I went back for a time 15 years ago, it was depressing. Funny, most who didn't like my move then have left Louisiana.

Baw between this thread and the other, you seem really upset? Everything ok?
It’s alright to acknowledge there are other places worth living outside of LA. That isn’t a slight to LA at all.

Agreed. I know this is a message board, but it’s disconcerting, to say the least.

I joined the Army when I was 17. I pretty got to see most of the world. A couple places I moved to sucked (Upstate NY and SE Georgia). But most of it (Denver, Panama, Germany and Thailand) were really cool places to live.
