I was tired of worrying about hurricanes and also wanted to make more money. I live in Sandy Springs, GA now.
You here a lot of noise about tech in New Orleans (IT, software development, etc.), but at the end of the day it's just a circle-jerk of the same 8 or 10 people giving each other innovation awards.

I left for the Navy in 1986. It's nice to visit, but I hear relatives bitching about how everything is bad in Louisiana, so we stay away. We lived in Louisville for a couple years, my wife's work has had us Atlanta, Nashville, and now Metro Austin. It's a shame, I have a huge extended family, and I wanted my kids to grow up with their cousins. Just never worked out.

If family is always complaining how bad it is, have they thought about moving?

We left to provide a better life and schools for our child. Plus just got sick of living in such a poor state.
We moved to TN and love it here. Except it's been a cold winter, that's taking some getting used to.

Utah was my destination.
Moved for job, career, opportunity. Louisiana has so little of that in most growing industries.
I love Utah. I admit, it was a big change directly from New Orleans to Salt Lake and I do miss some things about LA (family, food, fests and the water), but in general Quality of Life is so much higher here in general. Living by the mountains is awesome. Seasons. More sunshine less rain. Infinitely better infrastructure, a short flight or drive away from a lot of cool places (Louisiana is close to the Gulf Coast.....and that's about it). And the growth here bodes well for career and finances long term.

Bounced around, lived in MS, around Philly, NYC and am about to move to a white bread part of CT. Left for school and work. Got married and had kids.
All of these places. Except MS have pros and cons when compared to LA. The pros overwhelmingly outweigh the cons so no way in hell would I ever move back.

Grad school and work. Left in 1984. Retired 2019. Living in DFW metroplex. Not planning to move back to LA. Ever.

Aren’t you moving to a cooler mountain climate one day?
Potentially, but Louisiana can't really change its topography or weather. I've always loved the mountains, occasional snow and 4 distinct seasons.
I know a number of people that would rather live in humid 95 degree weather than to ever have to endure 15 degrees occasionally.

New York City.
When I graduated college and still in New Orleans my girlfriend at the time was living up here.
Great place to live if you are:
1)Single
2)Married/Have an SO but want no kids
3)A true OT Baller and want kids
If you are not in those three categories you will last 5 years and move out.

Sounds like me after I graduated the first time from LSU. I moved up there with a girlfriend.
I lasted around 15 months or so. I really enjoyed it for 6-8 months but that wore off pretty fast. I'm not that big of a fan of huge cities.

This has been a great thread for me to read. From BR (Central), graduated from LSU and lived in BR most of my life until circumstances brought me to Monroe where I’ve been the last 2+ years. Really looking to move and have pretty much circled Houston as where I hope to land. Not too far from BR so I can still make it home easily to see the aging parents plus I have family in Lake Charles so that will be an easy trip to make.
Just considering Houston has opened up so many possible job opportunities compared to before where I was only really considering Lafayette or back to BR.

It's a good option. I'm married with a teenager in school so I'm fairly grounded at the moment. I'm kind of sick of the terrain and weather of the deep south. If we make a move it will be to some mid sized mountain town.

Except MS
You don't think living in MS is better in some ways than living in Louisiana?
I thought living in Gulfport and Biloxi was pretty cool. You get 24-hour bars like New Orleans, but without the profoundly douchey out-of-town hipsters and artsy types.

I’m here for another 8 years. Literally the day I retire I’m gone. I LOVE three things about Louisiana.
LSU...can watch anywhere now
Food...I can cook it all now
People....this will be the hardest. Having friends throughout the country they are always amazed at how we all get together and hangout like family. I’ll miss this the most.
Other than those three things this entire place is a complete and utter shithole. Ravaged by crooked politicians,Parishes that have every opportunity to succeed just get torn apart by the stealing and greed until they are just as bad as the last place normal people ran from. Everyone on this board hates NBR. Well in 20 years the entire BR metro area will be that. Glad I’ll have cashed out and moved my kids out of here so they can raise families in a normal place.

My parents are getting older now and they are divorced. My dad is 71 and lives alone. It certainly complicates things but he stays for his grandkids. He'd rather be in Montana.
We'll likely reevaluate in 5 years when my kid is done with school. My wife and I have jobs that exist in every state in the country.

I left for money, The Woodlands area is nice, but I miss home

Moved in 1996. First to Minneapolis and then on to S Carolina. Both for jobs. We’ve been in SC since 2000 and raised three kids here. We live in a small town which was good for the kids.
The older I get, the more I miss Louisiana.

Moved to Austin and every time I get homesick I go back to NOLA and immediately remember why I moved. Literally everything is better here minus the food and culture.

Houston area, it’s the best decision ever. Great people, no income tax, great economy, lot to do, amazing schools!
