re: Those temperature gun, forehead thermometers are awfully inaccurate

I doubt it’s because it isn’t touching you. The heat transfer occurring on your skin is a function of ambient humidity and temperature, meaning your skin temperature is a function of ambient humidity and temperature as well as core temperature. Just leads to measurement noise.
IR thermometers are slightly inaccurate because they have to assume an emissivity but I bet that error is dwarfed by the measurement noise when trying to measure core temperature with a measurement of skin temperature.

Either way, the temperature thing is bullshite in identifying someone who is showing symptoms of Covid-19.
It is A symptom but not the only symptom. If you are running a fever, it only indicates that the patient should be further examined. How are they feeling? Have they had other symptoms, etc, etc. This is the reason they take your temp at the doctor's office first thing. It is simply an indicator. But to say it is "bullshite" is idiotic.

quote:Well, now that you mention it, I can think of another way they can get an “accurate” temperature on ya. My grandmother (RIP) believed an anal probe of a thermometer up the bunghole was the truest, best way to take a grandson’s temperature. Little FCP only made that mistake once....
in if they're going to be that anal about it.

I ruined a brisket last weekend by trusting those POS surface temp guns I stole from the haircut place.
That's your fault for being a dumb frick who can't comprehend what a surface temp gun might monitor.

There is no substitute for a good ole glass thermometer.

I was really sick last week with a kidney infection. My infrared thermometer said I was 100°, my ear thermometer said I was 101.5° and the EMT’s oral thermometer read 102.8° before they took me to the hospital. All taken within 30 minutes.

When belligerent drunks are gonna get turned away because of a temp and they already paid for their tickets.
Gonna be must see stuff.

My work stopped taking Temps because they weren't effective. Mine was regularly 94'ish in the morning.

They are worthless at measuring human body temperature. Especially in the hands of someone who does not know the proper way to use one. You will get a different reading at different distances based on the optics and quality of the gun.
Also, your forehead is about the worst place to take your temp.

I was supposedly at 92.7 on Tuesday entering the courthouse. A complete waste of time and money to pay someone to do that.

Just picked up my sweaty son from summer camp and they checked his temp as he was getting in the truck. 96.3
nope
Don't get me wrong. I see the need, b/c too many parents would happily dose the feverish kid with ibuprofen and hope they don't get checked again. I've seen it too often at my kid's daycare.

They check our temps with one of those thermometers and we make sure we take it easy as we walk the 100 or so yards to the front door.

My Dr Office uses those,,and I’ve told him for years they are a piece of shite. Read corpse cold when normal, and when I went in for a 100+ fever, it said 98.
Using them to screen business is the equivalent of TSA making you take off your belt. Just doing something to look like they are being proactive.

Went to a local ER to get some paperwork corrected because the MD that filled out the originals forgot what month he was living in when he signed them. Checked my forehead at 90.7 then held it to my throat for a 97 degree reading. Wasn't some off-the-shelf IR thermometer either, had the typical colors of a medical device and piece of junk probably cost a grand or more. My FLIR camera will see the paw-prints left by a cat walking across a carpet, think they'd at least use something similar.
