No, not really. Do you realize just how many different cities there are in what most people call “Birmingham?”

Why's Houston left off when they include Dallas? No way Dallas has a higher murder rate.

I hear people blame it on ports as if port cities somehow have higher murder rates than other cities. Bull.

These aren’t all port cities.

Port cities with low murder rates-
Charleston
Miami
Savannah
Houston
Long Beach
San Diego
Seattle

ABRAHAM LINCOLN - “I should not know what to do as to the existing institution of slavery. My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia, to their own native land.” shame he did not follow through.

A much better view of murder rate would include the corresponding metro areas of these cities. This would bring the murder averages of cities like Bham and Richmond down to the middle of the pack. But it wouldn't help New Orleans much.
Are you saying Jefferson Parish/St. Tammany/Plaquemines/etc. have a similar murder rate to New Orleans?

That's sort of built on the archaic idea that "port cities" were constantly bringing in lots of sketchy itinerant types, along with the sort of inherent sketchiness of dock areas and the people needed to work them, who were all contributing to the "criminal element."

Modern shipping has all but done away with that dynamic.

That I don't know. Poor souls.

What I do know is that murder rate by city population has always made some cities look much worse off if you don't include the metro areas (like mine here in Richmond) where crime outside of certain zips in the city is extremely low.

The good news..i think..Jax is slowly dropping in the ranks, but to be honest , I only remember that there was a point we were near top 10 so the numbers could be the same and other places are now worse

The homicide rate per capita in New Orleans is THREE times that of OAKLAND! That should tell you something. Oakland is one of the most dangerous cities in the United States.

Jefferson Parish has some rough areas but is wayyyy safer than New Orleans. It has a higher population than Nola but a fifth of the murders. St. Tammany likely is in the single digit murder count. Including the Nola suburbs in the murder count would cause the murder rate to drop considerably, just like every metro area.

Houston’s Sunnyside, Sharpstown, and Greenspoint have some of the highest murder rates in the entire nation. Some real ratchet, hoodrat shite goes down in Houston.

No - it actually has a worse rate than NOLA but wasn’t included on Asher’s list bc the population is too small
