Are people still able to get more money being unemployed? If so, when you are unemployed you have to look for a job right? I am sure that's easy to get around, but it runs out at some point right?

In some states, it’s not that hard to get around.

The article actually did talk about that and how the UI benefits gave these workers a financial cushion to pursue other careers and theoretically better themselves.

Yeah I’m sure all of those fast food workers who haven’t come back to work are simply too busy pursuing graduate degrees.

To be honest, it does seem like there is something more than all of these people continuously living off of unemployment benefits. It doesn't last forever and not everyone will continue to be okay with receiving what they get from unemployment if they make more working.

Maybe not, I really don't know.. But I am sure there is a percentage of people who were in the service industry who was able to find something else.

You’re naive. Halfway filling out an application is easy to do when everyone is accepting applications. That’s all they have to do. All they have to do is SAY they did that. They don’t even have to actually apply.

This is true. 95% of the time they put a fake phone number and email address and don't show up to a scheduled interview. I'm in the industry and have seen it first hand.

Certain states have set up hotlines that businesses can call and report people who apply and never show up to interviews just to keep unemployment going, thus cancelling any extra unemployment. I agree with this strategy.

You’re ignorant and a fool. And I don’t mean those as insults I mean them as facts. No insult intended.

I would think people would want to get back to being able to earn as much money as they can instead of getting whatever limited amount the government

Literally 48% of this country at minimum disagrees with you.

Can someone answer these questions for me? It seems like most restaurants and service type jobs are having problems hiring people. This doesn't apply to professional jobs from what I can see. Is this a fair assessment?

Professional people with core-competencies in various skill sets will never be unemployed.

Places with high turnover like the service industry and retail are having problems. They usually replace crappy workers with more crappy workers quickly but when that big group of potential workers no longer want to work they have no one to replace people with.

No way feds are handing out enough money to people that were working and now aren’t to keep them afloat.

Lots of Americans are perfectly fine with sitting in a shitty apartment and playing PS5 all day long. They are definitely getting enough to do that.

Minumum wage jobs are meant for people just entering the work force imo. I didnt flip burgers, I wrangled carts at WalMart. Now we hear that oh minimum wage wont pay the bills in :insertmajormetrocity: Yea no shite. It is a job meant to employ teenagers as a summer or college job. It isn't my fault no one ever aspired to go beyond that.

technically yes but nobody actually checks that. When I was on unemployment back in 2017 all they asked was places you applied to you could just put any bs down and they wouldn’t care

I’m no economics expert but my 401K is 18% higher than it was 5 years ago. It’s also worth 50% less than it was 5 years go and dwindling. Why is that?

There was an article last week on the labor shortage, particularly in the hotel and restaurant industry. Seems a lot of restaurant workers felt incredibly better while not working last year and realized the toll restaurant work took on their bodies and many have decided to pursue other careers

The compensation for an average front desk agent at a hotel is terrible, comes with needing to know a good bit in the systems and is far more abusive than many retail environments.

Can’t blame any of them for hopping ship to be a Costco cashier and making more with better benefits and generally a better environment.

Similar for housekeeping where office buildings pay more, you aren’t walking into TRASHED rooms and the drive for rooms per shift and cleanliness survey scores don’t beat you up

As it turns out, hard jobs with low pay are going to be among the hardest to fill if there are any alternatives

So where are the vast higher paying jobs all these minimum wage people are supposed to be growing into? There are two sides to that, no?

It’s between a quarter and third of the workforce under $15 an hour. I don’t think the workers or the employers are seeing those as summer jobs for high school kids.

Went to Chillis in West Monroe and the lady that seated us smelled like cheese.

Won't be back anytime soon.

Should have went to the Outback next door. That’s the restaurant I referred to when I said I walked two miles. I lived behind the Brookshires on Cypress. I’m not lying. I walked most days too work and most days I couldn’t get a ride home because I worked the closing shift to earn more money.

Most welders we would rather sit at home and munch on pills.

Ordered BW3 here in Columbus last night. They were only doing take out. Not enough staff to run the bar and restaurant side....on a Friday night.
