In the 1970’s my first job was at McDonald’s.
Worked as a cook next to a guy from Jamaica.
The guy was super laid back and always gave 100% on the job.
Immigration came in and picked him up one day as his visa ended when he dropped out of school.

Back then everyone in my high school junior snd senior class did something to make money. Cut grass, work at McDonald’s, Burger Chef, bag groceries, etc.

Even while in college everyone had some sort of job. Either a campus job or a part time gig.

I get the initial surge if folks not working.... but now this is still happening?
I don’t get it.

Unemployment benefits are basically endless with an additional $300 per week covid kicker. That means, the people who used to work these jobs are now collecting near the national average for annual income to sit home and do nothing. We are starting to see states finally undo this. Georgia, Alaska, Mizzou, and Miss are doing it this week.

Because the media wouldn't talk about these ridiculous UI benefits and how they are actually discouraging people from returning to work.

The article actually did talk about that and how the UI benefits gave these workers a financial cushion to pursue other careers and theoretically better themselves.

You can literally get 600 bucks a week sitting on your arse.
That's equivalent to $15/hr.
Who in hell would want to go to work for less?

With the privilege of working you get

A. Lose 40 hours a week of your life
B. Buy gas to drive to work
C. Pay for health insurance
D. Buy meals out for lunches
E. Buy clothing for job

obviously the answer is for companies to raise wages to attract workers, which totally won’t result in higher prices being passed to the consumer so that the companies can stay solvent with the added cost of labor, which totally won’t mean cost of living creeps up, which totally won’t mean government has to raise the floor at which they subsidize peoples’ existence, which totally won’t mean people will clamor for higher wages or they’ll just take the government cheese

it is true that wages haven’t kept up with cost of living and this is going to have to change to convince people to go back to work if we are going to have the welfare state as constructed, but this cycle is going to be never ending with our current expansionary monetary system and in the end the lower class is never truly going to win

This guy gets it.

Yes. I pay taxes.

How long do you think the federal government can pay millions of people 30 grand per year not to work? And if they could, how long could we thrive as a society with almost zero median to low income work force?

Good for them. The clock is running out on these benefits, and when it does, look out.

The state + the Federal boost for UI benefits in Louisiana is within $10/week of the median wage in the state.

The waffle house in monroe was closed yesterday because they didn't have enough workers. Ruined my morning.
