It's the normal overall sales tax for the parish 10.75%. For whatever reason this website decided to break down the sales tax on the receipt instead of behind the scenes like most businesses.

LA doesn't require it. The Feds do and it's only required in five parishes.

No. 1, It's a federal mandate, not state.
No.2, It's not the state as a whole; it's by the Parish (or county) depending on how bad the air pollution is there. If it is bad, they have to do emissions tests as a way of making sure a person's car is not adding to the pollution problem (you know, the types with horrible smelling, white smoke exhaust). Baton Rouge area I believe has it, New Orleans does not.
No. 3, I know that in terms of other Southern States, at least the metro Atlanta area has it (Cobb, Fulton and DeKalb Counties for sure); when I lived there in the late 1980s and early 1990s you needed to get an emissions test as part of your inspection sticker ("brake tag" round these parts).

Louisiana consistently ranks as about the worst red state on total tax burden. Factor in how poor the average Louisianan is, and it has to be the worst. Only to be outdone by place like California, New York, and New Jersey

Our total tax burden is ranked 39th. Last time I checked the median US home prices are around $450k. You can easily buy a house in Louisiana for well under that. I’m sorry but Louisiana’s cost of living is one of the cheapest in the US with all things considered. A quick google search has LA as #5 for lowest cost of living.

Yep and despite all of our terrible rankings, currently 31, we still basically pay overall relatively the same amount of taxes as Texas, ranked 7th.
Here is an article in BR Business Report from 2017 that basically demonstrates regardless of rankings overall we pay about the same in taxes as our neighbors to the west. Article is dated but unless there has been drastic changes in one or both of our tax codes it still true today.

I bought a Kayak online and when I went to pay taxes on it so I could get it registered I had already figured the tax because I needed a money order. I had to go get another money order because they told me I had to pay tax on the shipping as well.

Yep and BR and Denham city taxes push everything above 10 percent and it make me wonder where it goes in Denham with all the new subdivision local shopping revenues.
