Years ago I had been putting off a needed back surgery and happened to get laid off.
I had lived in Texas for 8 years but went home (Louisiana) to have surgery while on my extended vacation, was there 5 months, then moved back to Texas.
During the downtime I drew unemployment, the state of Louisiana found out and sent me a tax bill for state income taxes which I fought for years but they won.
Finally I said F it and paid it because they blocked me from being able to obtain a hunting or fishing license, by then it was $1,500 with penalties and interest.

Fiscal policy is a moral issue. Taking more of someone else’s money, wasting it, piling debt onto future generations, and making people increasingly dependent on government are not morally neutral positions.
But I appreciate you appointing yourself the morality hall monitor and proving your ignorance all in one post.

You have to tax someone to pay for basic services. The state has decided against businesses being on the list of those getting taxed.
It works though because the wages those businesses pay are much higher than everywhere else in the country.

Best parish to live in where those taxes are Zero is Cameron Parish. But as one poster put it, good luck finding a house that isn’t 20 feet off the ground and built like a tank. Plus you have the factor of not being able to find affordable insurance.

I thought the state increased its sales & use rate to 5% as part of lowering state income taxes (or going to a flat rate). Is the state’s sales tax % lowered to 4.5% in areas taxing for levees?

No, you've been supposed to file sales taxes on stuff you bought from out of state that wasn't done at the point of sale since the Palm Pilot. Amazon settled with a bunch of states to collect the tax up front on their behalf, since nobody was filing shite. It's still your duty to the great state of, "but I see my cousins every other week" to file, whether your out of state vendor did for you or not.

Them sons of bitches in Baton Rouge raised those rates back in 2024 for 2025. I forgot this. I thought we were still paying 4.45. The only saving grace is that unlike some states like Mississippi, the tax is only on hot foods and non food items. Mississippi has a 5% sales tax on food while everything else is taxed at 7%.
Also, in Louisiana we do not pay sales tax on residential utilities.

It’s not bad our low income tax and property tax make up for it compared to other states. Real estate is super cheap in Louisiana also
