I bet a day of cleaning and painting one of those churches is really good for the soul. People would probably rather it look just like that though, just the way Jesus intended. The one where the reverend drives a 30 year old Cadillac and that's just fine by him.

Very cool church but no air conditioning. I attended a full mass wedding there in May where we all had to wear suits. Sweat through my entire outfit - just brutal.

I’ve been to a few cool churches and cathedrals but this one is my favorite. It’s on the Channel island of Guernsey and it’s called The Little Chapel. The exterior is decorated with seashells, pebbles, and broken china.
ETA: I now see that the title is breathtaking churches in the states. Whoops.

Not US but the most impressive church I’ve seen is the Cathedral in Salisbury (1228 AD) Not only was it impressive …. but you had a copy of one of the original Magna Cartas….
