I would have guessed 40-50 miles so I wouldn't have been too far off. Not sure why this is something to be excited about
I know its not an OweO quality observation, so my excitement was tempered as I watched that sunrise yesterday.

BTW, if you split the difference in your guess, and say 45 miles... your guess would have been 32.4% high, and thus pretty far off. Not awful, but not all that impressive either.

I know what you are trying to say, but that isn't technically correct. The western entrance is the one located further west.

What you were trying to say was: "The Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal is further West than the Pacific entrance. And vice versa"

Also, I am not the one that down voted you.

Sad that they are so close, yet light years ahead of us in football.

I agree with your correction. The geography of the Panama Canal is quite fascinating; but the use of "eastern entrance, western entrance" is really not done, because of this, as you stated.

I have always heard it stated as "did you know that when traveling from the Pacific to the Atlantic in the Panama Canal, you travel westbound?" Or more correctly, northwesterly? I may or may not have downvoted that post, I cannot recall.

That is crazy. And awesome. I love fun facts like this.

I have one that is more subjective, I suppose:

Denver is NOT a "western" city! Not even all that close. Denver is a city very near the western edge of the Great Central Plains.

Don't believe me? Look at a map. Consider these facts too:
- Denver is ~950 miles east of San Francisco
- Denver is ~825 from the nearest Pacific coastline (near Oceanside, CA)
- Denver is only 1,554 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean (near Norfolk, VA)
- Denver is closer to Chicago, St. Louis and Memphis than it is to San Francisco.
