There is a point on a Chandeleur Island that is only 34.3 miles southwest of the westernmost tip of Dauphin Island.

Even funner fact: I’ve ridden that exact route in a 14ft skiff with a 25hp on the back during a fishing tournament. At the time (18 y/o), one of my proudest moments, nowadays—I’m thankful that I didn’t end up being crab bait at the bottom of the Gulf.

I’m guessing that you started at Dauphin Island?

Just curious about how those islands are claimed by Louisiana.
Since the closest landmass they are near is, well, The Landmass, or Mississippi.

Louisiana was admitted to the Union before Mississippi. When Mississippi was admitted there was a dispute over who owned the islands and the states sued each other over it. The resolution was that a whiskey barrel would be released in the mouth of the Pearl River and the path of the barrel would determine the boundary. The barrel floated mostly east and most of the islands were determined to be Louisiana territory.

No, actually started in D’Iberville, MS, on the mainland to Chandeleur Light (for cobia), then Chandeleur Light to Dauphin island, hitting some spots at Horn island and Petit Bois along the way (we were targeting pompano on the south sides). Gassed up in Bayou La Batre and worked our way back. Multiple tanks on board. Not sure how the engine just didn’t melt down.

Dalhart, TX is closer to the capitals of six other States than it is to Austin, capital of TX.

Of all the cool facts (and bullshite) I have learned on this thread, I think this one is the coolest.

Without looking at a map, I am going to try to name them:
- Santa Fe
- Denver
- Cheyenne
(which ALMOST is in Colorado)
- Oklahoma City
- Phoenix

The last guess is a tough one, I don't think it is Salt Lake City or Boise, so I am gonna have to go with:
- Topeka

ETA:
this one gets answered below:
Phoenix is WRONG
Add Lincoln to be correct on all.

Ok, lose Phoenix and add either Lincoln or Jefferson City. Yay or nay?

Gut tells me Lincoln.

I checked the map, it is Lincoln.

Other facts from this exercise:
- part of the Iowa-Nebraska border is closer to Dalhart, TX than Dalhart is to Austin
- part of the Iowa - South Dakota border is closer to Dalhart than Dalhart is to Austin
- Fayetteville, Arkansas is closer to Dalhart than Dalhart is to Austin
- Monument Valley (UT-AZ) is closer to Dalhart than Dalhart is to Austin
- parts of Mexico east of Big Bend and west of Del Rio are closer to Dalhart than Dalhart is to Austin

takeoff from ATL heading due south, no winds, the first part of SA that you'd encounter would be the west coast of Ecuador
