The closest state to Africa is Maine.

There is only one country that seperates Norway from North Korea:Russia.

I love fun facts.

Yep, and on any Saturday during the summer that is the most miserable trip ever (coming or going). Makes Baton Rouge slow hour traffic (between 7:00-10:00 in the morning or 3:00-7:00 in afternoon) seem like the Autobahn!

Not accounting for traffic, someone in New Orleans could get Gulf Shores, AL faster than someone in Birmingham could.

Just curious about how those islands are claimed by Louisiana.
Since the closest landmass they are near is, well, The Landmass, or Mississippi.

Just guessing here.. but Louisiana (particularly New Orleans) had a LOT of clout from pre-Revolutionary War, through the Louisiana Purchase, up to the Civil War. These island/map decisions were probably made in early 1800s.

Had New York State not built the Erie Canal, then New Orleans would have been far more important up to the Civil War. The Erie Canal made New York City a useable port for goods coming from (and going to) the interior of the United States, to/from Europe. Prior to the Erie Canal, New Oreans was in a better position to handle commerce to/from the Ohio River, Mississippi River and Missouri River Valleys.

I would have not been able to give you the exact distance between the shortest distance between the two states, but having seen maps I would have guessed 40-50 miles so I wouldn't have been too far off. Not sure why this is something to be excited about.
