There are many people who need internet or a smart phone for work. But let's be honest, most of it is just addiction and habit, we don't HAVE to have it.

To be fair, is $200/month for cell service for 2 and $60 for internet the best deal that a budgeting couple can find?

I call bullshite you can’t afford a $265,000 house in a $75k a year household income.

If you didn’t have a smart phone or home internet would you lose your job or die?

Then if your company can’t provide you with one, you are one of those people that need a smart phone with internet. Not everyone does, most can just have a regular phone. We may not want that, but most people can get by with just that.

Internet is such a basic necessity now that the government provides it for free for people under the poverty line if I’m remembering correctly. You could get around in the world so much easier if you were totally deaf than if you didn’t any access to the internet.

All of this assumes that you don’t live completely off the grid which is 99.9% of Americans.

This board is so out of touch

It’s not out of touch, it’s just wants vs needs. If your job requires you to have internet while off then I get it. Be honest, you want it, but don’t need it at home. I have a bank app on my phone, I may use it 3-4 times a year for convenience. Having a smart phone is for convenience. If you prefer a smartphone and home internet over owning a house then that’s your choice. I had that choice myself years ago and chose a house.

75000 X 0.37 ÷ 12 = $2312/month piti payment.

Whatever you can fit inside of there is what you can afford according to Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac guidelines.

Of course you could “survive” in the most basic definition possible, but you would severely be handicapping your potential in every part of life by not being able to access the internet. Everything would have to be found out the hard way and take much longer to complete. Seen a phonebook anytime recently?

So much of society’s basic functions assume that you have internet now.

This has to be a troll post

Can you have a smart phone but not home internet or vice versa? Or use internet at work? I’m not trolling. I’m being serious. Wife and I are 50, got internet in 2014, she got a smart phone in 15, me in 17. We were perfectly fine, but by then could afford it. It’s not mandatory for most people. Most people have access at work. Or you could simply have a smart phone but not home internet, most people demand both, especially young people.

I have to disagree. If you have children, internet at home is a must - so much of schooling is done online. Not to mention, telehealth, banking and utilities all push online nowadays. And to be fair, you can get functional internet for $20-30/month so it’s not like cutting that expense makes a huge difference throughout the year.

So I guess the intent here is to smile at the naive "old" person, but you're only a few years older than me (if you're not trolling here). You have to be trolling.

Maybe so but daughter graduated in 2016, it was 2014 before we had home internet and she was straight As. I don’t know why you need telehealth or banking on internet. I said earlier I do use my bank app 3-4 times a year but that’s for convenience, I don’t have to. Utilities we send a check, I’m not paying convenience fees.

The truth is y’all are worried about us “old school out of touch” folks, I’m not even a boomer. I was just raised poor. We are “out of touch” but somehow were able to live without the finer things in our 20s, people now just refuse to. I do agree in Louisiana insurance is a bitch though and currently buying a house is difficult. It’s been difficult many times over the last century, it sucks, but if you want one, sometimes you have to give up nicer things to have it. If you need internet, fresh coffee at coffee shop everyday, Netflix, Amazon, nice ride, then owning a home isn’t gonna work for someone who is 24, or 30, or 50
