The Manson Family Murders...

Has there ever been a more interesting & bizarre crime story ?

I first read Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi when I was 14 (1975)...one of the best crime books of all time. I remember it creeped me out so bad that I slept with a knife by my bedside just in case...

Even now, as an old adult, I'm still amazed at the whole thing.

How this one little man convinced fairly normal young adults to willingly kill for him, not to mention how he tied it all to The Beatles White Album.

If you've never read Helter Skelter, put it on your list.

Supposedly Bugliosi's book is more fiction than true crime.

if you have Netfllix, check out "Aquarius".

it's purely fictional. but if you are familiar with the Manson Family, it's fun to watch.

Hardly an anomaly. I honestly don’t get all the interest in the case 50 years later.

Bugliosi also wrote this book below that is a fantastic read as well.

He was an amazing lawyer. He got Manson convicted on a murder rap not just ‘conspiracy’ and kept him in jail until his death. He wasn’t even there and still got him convicted.

I mean, he's no Jim Jones, but still impressive.

He was an outcast of society and was able to recognize other outcasts. He won them over by being the only person who had ever shown them love.

But I'm still not sure if he actually told them to kill anyone. There's no proof either way.

Charlie was a small time hood and con man who found himself in the middle of a bunch of lost kids. I get the impression at first he could scarcely believe how completely they fell for it. Eventually he started buying into the con himself.

ETA I include the Beach Boys, Terry Melcher, et al among the "lost kids.". If they had told Charlie to take a hike in the first place, none of this would have happened. They let him hang around and get the idea he was entitled to a record deal.

Helter Skelter was a reference to the race war that Charles predicted would happen in the future. That Charley was one crazy SOB Huh ?!

I grew up in the 60s. After the Manson Family stuff a lot more people started locking their doors at night even in rural America...

We had a back door to the house that wouldn't lock good...could open pretty easily if you jiggled it a bit.

After reading Helter Skelter that fricking door became almost an obsession with me.
