I’d be willing to bet it wasn’t nearly that many. The whole country was an agrarian society. I doubt many people could afford (or even had a need for) slaves when they themselves worked for someone else.

It was always odd to me that places with strong Union support, like East Tennessee, barely remembered that part of their history.

That’s pretty well known unless you are referring to the methy parts.

OP,

If it’s true that the majority of whites in the south supported the union, then why did democrats dominate the south for nearly a century following the war?

Wouldn’t the common southerner have voted Republican, the party of the union?

Why don't presidents fight the war? They always send the poor

A lot of them have before they became president. Also we have had a voluntary military since Vietnam.

Read the paper. Good reading. Not surprised at all.

I uploaded the paper into Gemini Pro and created a podcast on the paper. Gemini got no input from me other than the paper. It's pretty interesting as the AI gives analysis and opinion on the paper. Check it out.

The starvation was due to the wealthy southern planters choosing to grow cash crops over food for their own benefits.

Plantations were self sufficient operations. They raised enough food crops, cows, hogs, chickens, and sheep to feed everyone on the plantation. Plus trusted slaves were allowed to hunt and fish on the weekends for their personal consumption.

To say that planters should have stopped growing cotton and convert to growing food for the Confederate armies is totally stupid. The author is FoS!

Southern Democrats paved the way for secession, and Southern dirt farmers supported it. Starvation was not due to any blockade. It was due to Johnny Reb going off to fight and leaving his 5 acre vegetable patch.

In 1860 in 1 Va county Lincoln got 9 votes

when asked how this could be, a resident replied, "I don't know, but when we find the son of a bitch who voted 9 times we're gonna hang him"

The Free State of Winston is a popular name given to Civil War-era Winston County, as a reflection of the county's generally pro-Union stance and resistance to Confederate rule during the war. During the secession crisis, Unionists in Winston County declared their right to secede from Alabama; much as the state seceded from the Union. Although the county pulled back from the bold step of secession and hoped to remain neutral in the conflict, it remained under state control and was the scene of violent acts of retribution during and after the war.
Alabama had the The Free State of Winston Encyclopedia of Al.

I had ancestors on both sides of my family fought for the Confederacy

Same. My grandfather’s grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Moss, Colonel of the Eighth Mississippi Infantry also known as the Tullahoma Hardshells. OP can kiss my arse.

Edit - my bad he was actually a captain in the eighth Mississippi not the colonel of it but still

All those democrats wanted to keep their slaves and plantations. The common folks didn’t want to participate in the war.

bullshite. Look at WW1. Britain took steps to ensure food production while Germany drafted farm boy after farm boy to fight. The result was Germany literally starved itself out of the war as well as suffering from the blockade.

The South was no different despite your protestations to the contrary. Without the army, the war is lost. IF the war is lost, no more slavery so the planters should have been producing enough food to sustain the war effort.

Why is that totally stupid?

Having food to eat seems pretty smart.

eta-it's called a 'war footing.' Sort of like car factories turning out tanks in WW2.

an army does travel on its stomach.

During the spring offensive, a German advance stalled out because.......

the troops were starving so much they looted the down of all food and spent the whole day eating when they should have been fighting.
