Fifty years ago, the Beatles broke up — it wasn’t the first time, and it wasn’t necessarily supposed to be the last. But the world finally got the message on April 10th, 1970. That was the day Paul McCartney made headlines with a Q&A he sent out with press copies of his solo album McCartney, in which he casually announced a “break with the Beatles.” Why? “Personal differences, business differences, musical differences, but most of all because I have a better time with my family.” Temporary or permanent? “I don’t know.” Was he planning to make any more music with the band? “No.”

Paul had said things like this before, in public and in private — all four of them had. But this time, nobody made a move to deny it. When their new movie Let It Be premiered in London on May 20th, none of them showed up. The four Beatles never got together to watch the movie or listen to the album. The four Beatles never set foot in the same room again.

I've never quite decided whether it was better for the Beatles to go out at the apex of their game together, or whether they would have done incredible things as music moved into the 70's. I lean towards the former, but it's still fun to think about.

That’s rich, coming from a generation who can’t find melody or lyrical composition with a roadmap.

You people are just ridiculously ignorant.

I’m no Beetles nut, but you give credit where credit is clearly due.

I have two sisters (no pics) that were teenagers when the Beatles played at City Park. They cried when my parents wouldn't let them go.. My Mom packed them in the car and drove passed the stadium while the Beatles played..They cried some more.

One can say that they don't like the Beatles' music, but anyone attempting to downplay the impact they had on music is simply ignorant. It's not an accident that so many artists over the last few decades claim the Beatles as an "influence" on their music.

Such an ignorant take. Either you don’t like music, so your opinion doesn’t matter, or you do like music and understand they have had a profound impact on just about every musician, producer, sound engineer, etc in the past 60 years.

Not at all trying to be "that guy." Just never have really gotten it. But whatever, I respect what they were able to do to the music scene. Just don't really like the music.

The brevity of their run is WILD to consider. They were together for 5 years after coming to America. Five.

It's not for everyone. With that said, at lot of people, when they think of the Beatles, think of their early bubblegum pop music. With the exception of a handful songs, those albums can mostly be ignored. They came into their own with Rubber Soul, then continued with Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, the White Album (it's self titled, so it's referred to by the album cover), ending with Abbey Road.

If you haven't actually tried listening to those albums in full, you should. You may end up still disliking the Beatles, but then you'll know.

I’m with you. It could have went either way. On those last 2 albums George was turning into a brilliant musician. The Lennon/McCartney team was more and more fractured. However their music was as good as ever. It’s hard to believe they were all like 30 and under at that time. So much accomplished at such a young age. They hadn’t put out a bad album at the time they broke. Some maybe more interesting or out there than others, but it was all great and always pushing the boundaries.

However they could have been a band that did an album together every 3-5 years, sparsely enough they could tolerate each other enough to work and have space to do their own thing.

Sad thing is I don’t think any of them ever really ruled it out.

Completely agree with this and was going to post something similar. Listening to one of those start to finish, on repeat, is what got me into them in the first place. There is something for everyone in their catalog, you just have to go find it.
