The F-150 Lightning is finally shipping — is Ford ready?

The first Ford F-150 Lightnings are rolling off assembly lines and heading to customers today after almost a year of anticipation. The company’s second EV after the successful Mustang Mach-E is in a category of one for the moment: the only full-size electric pickup truck available right now. (Rivian has sold around 2,000 of the well-reviewed R1T, but it slots somewhere between the compact Toyota Tacoma and full-size trucks like the F-150.) Full-size competitors from GM, Ram, and Tesla are all forthcoming, but the Lightning will have the market to itself for at least a year, and Ford CEO Jim Farley intends to take full advantage of that lead to steal customers away from his competitors.
“We should send every one to a customer who’s never bought a Ford before,” Farley tells me in a short interview last week. “My opinion is we should go for it.”
After he ships out all 200,000 preorders, of course. Demand for the Lightning has been so strong that Ford’s invested $950 million into factory expansion, added 750 jobs, and doubled production, but some preorder customers will still be waiting until 2023 to get their trucks, and Ford’s website says no more 2022 Lightnings are available.
The plant had built about 1,800 Lightnings when we spoke, and Farley says that while Ford will be “on plan” with its capacity goals, he simply laughed and said “no” when asked if production would meet demand anytime soon. There simply aren’t enough batteries to build Ford’s goal of 150,000 Lightnings a year. But even then, Farley says he’s confident that the battery plant in Georgia Ford operates in partnership with SK Battery will be able to scale up. “I think we’re in good shape for batteries, and that seems to be the biggest gating issue to get to 150,000 units,” he says.

Wonder how long before it’s difficult to get a gas or diesel pickup?

I'm very interested in the truck but I am not gonna be Ford's guinea pig

If the electronic failures on the MachE are any indication of what’s coming on the F150L, I’d wait for 2-3 years at a minimum.

Well, at least the Ecoboost won't grenade at 75k miles like usual.

I think there are some very practical features on this truck that will come in handy. I still think we're a long long way away from fully electric vehicles being common practice.

Hope they can build and ship faster than the current F150s. I'm coming up on 5 months since I ordered and it's been built for a month still waiting on a train from Detroit, then an additional month to get delivered to my dealer.

Never be a guinea pig for a domestic manufacturer.

I would be interested if not for the sh!t towing range.
That’s totally deal breaker for baws with boats.

What's the MSRP on this truck?

55 to 90+, so pretty similar to the ICE trucks

I've had a Bronco reservation for 21 months. On order for 15 months. Probably still 12-18 months before it is built.
However I found one out of state last week and I snatched it up. Don't think I will be taking possession of my order as I will most likely keep this one.

This has been my rule of thumb throughout life for any new vehicle.. i have always purposefully avoided buying a first year new model, or redesign, until they ge tthe kinks worked out .. same exact thing with this new Ford E-truck.

If the range rating is anything like their ICE trucks, this is going to be off by 100 miles.
No way I will ever pull up to my oil and gas job in an electric vehicle.

Theoretically it would work for me due to my driving habits but I have no faith in any EV today. I am going to need about 5 years to see how many problems they have before I can buy in

I am going to need a bunch of F150 Lightnings on the used car market with around 20k-30k miles before i buy one .. probably looking at 10-15 yrs minimum .
