BREAKING: America’s $1.7 trillion auto loan market is headed for a crash, per Reuters.

Auto loans are now one of the biggest sources of household debt, bigger than credit cards.

And the strain is showing: 1 in 5 Americans is behind on at least one loan, the highest since 2010, and the average car on the road is now nearly 13 years old, a record.

How can the average car be 13 years old and debt be so high? Also prices are not going down so apparently this is not that big an issue.

06 Chevy 1500. Got 215k on it.
Debating on selling it and buying another just slightly nicer one.

But my neighbor got a hybird Suv, Gets 50 MPG on the innerstated and 29 around town.

Blows my mind.

New vehicles are overpriced pieces of junk.
Most 13 year old vehicles will probably outlive a new vehicle.
Especially Trucks

Probably a lot of old junk cars that's registered but barely see the road extending out the average.

My buddy has a 1980 C10 truck. A 2019 and a 2026. That makes their 3 vehicles avg to almost 18yrs old.

How many 3rd-owner luxury vehicles, Chargers, and Altimas are financed to the hilt parked in the front of Section 8 housing?

Wife- 2 years old- (3 year lease).

Me- company vehicle with unlimited personal use for the past 25 years. All fuel/insurance/repairs provided. Company trades my truck about every 18 months-2 years or prior to 100,000 miles. Not a bad deal.

2021 Ram.

I'll likely trade it in once the extended warranty ends because I know that MGU is a ticking time bomb on the eTorque Hemis.

2012 f150 hanging in there.

Things that are newer and worth more: SXS, bicycles, skid steer and excavator.

I looked at trucks and just couldn’t pull trigger with those prices.

My daily has 265,000 miles and I plan to drive it much longer. I usually have a second fun car but I don't right now.

14 year old F250, bought new in 2012 and it's ~140 miles away from crossing 200,000 miles. It's getting a new AC compressor, new ball joints, and some other service items soon.

I’m at 242k ish. Same truck/year
Replaced ac compressor a while back. May need to check my ball joints. My truck has felt little off lately.

I traded in a 2012 Camry and a 2013 Highlander in December of 2025. Got a 2025 Rav4. Paid the balance of the car. It was exactly half the listed price with the two trade-ins. Hope I can drive it for 12-13 years.
